Zack is a 3rd year BA English student. He decided to apply to City as he knew the course would be different compared to other universities.
What were you doing before you came to study at City?
Before I came to study at City I was taking a gap year after completing my A-Levels. I spent the year focusing on an extra A-Level I decided to take - psychology - as I wanted to stay engaged with the academic side of life whilst enjoying a break. I chose psychology as it would complement aspects of English literature very well. I spent the year alternating between revision and leisure, trying out a range of activities such as bouldering, trampolining and badminton.
Why did you decide to apply to study at City?
Upon reading the course structure I could tell that English would be different at City compared to other universities. The selection of electives was interesting and there was great emphasis on not only the creative side of literature, but the professional and academic sides too. The option to do a semester of work placement in particular intrigued me, as I would have the opportunity to experience a sector within English that could one day be my career. The location of City is also very convenient and full of literary connections, some of which we've had the chance to explore in great depth.
What is your favourite thing about studying at City?
My favourite thing about City is the abundance of opportunities available to students, whether it be in the form of internships and work experience or workshops and trips. Within my course we study a vast array of texts and have had the chance to visit museums and theatres, as well as have guest lecturers provide workshops that enhance our knowledge greatly.
What kind of things are you involved in outside of your course?
Outside of my course I am involved in the Student Ambassador scheme, Widening Participation (tutoring), the City Buddy scheme (mentoring), the English Literary Journal and the LGBT Society.
Have you had the opportunity to do any work experience or placements?
In my first year I have gained a lot of work experience working as a Student Ambassador and Student Representative for the course. I am also tutoring, mentoring and preparing myself for work placements.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I plan to complete my Master’s and PGCE and hopefully start teaching soon after.
What would be your top tip for our applicants?
Don't be afraid to try new things! There are so many things to do at City that will help you build connections and develop skills - step out of your comfort zone every once in a while and delve in.
