About
Overview
Namrata Acharya is a PhD student in the Department of Communication and Creativity at City, University of London. Her research focuses on transformative climate justice and its interaction with development, viewed through the lens of alternative media in India. Inspired by the works of Dr. Jean Drèze, she aims to experiment with the concept of ‘action-oriented research’ in journalism to bring positive impacts to people's lives through research.
Previously, for nearly twelve years, she worked as an assistant editor with Business Standard newspaper, followed by a short stint as a freelance journalist in India. While covering areas such as banking, finance, and public policy, she always endeavored to connect business news with the lives of common people in India. She traveled extensively in the remote regions of eastern India to cover stories on subjects like microfinance, migration, development, land-related conflicts and displacement, and the environment. Her bylines have appeared in Al Jazeera, South China Morning Post, the Danish Development Research Network, and Mongabay, among other publications.
In 2018 and 2020, Namrata won grants from the Earth Journalism Network to pen a series of stories from the deltaic Sundarbans region of India. Her reporting on the Sundarbans won the C R Irani Award for Environment Reporting, one of the prominent awards for environmental reporting in India. It was also shortlisted for the Kurt Schork Memorial Fund award by the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Namrata is also a recipient of numerous journalism fellowships and scholarships. This includes the World Press Institute Fellowship, Media Ambassador India-Germany fellowship by the Robert Bosch Foundation, Thomson Reuters scholarship to attend a training course in business and finance writing, and Erasmus Mundus scholarship to pursue an MA in Media, Journalism, and Globalisation from Aarhus University, Denmark, and City, University of London.
