About
Overview
Kirsten is a paediatric Occupational Therapist with experience in working with children and young people with disabilities and their families, across a variety of contexts. She has an interest in supporting parents/caregivers of children with disabilities which has led much of her research career thus far.
Kirsten began her doctoral fellowship at City University in October 2022 after receiving funding from the newly established HARP PhD Programme. The HARP (Health Advances for underrepresented Populations) fellowship has allowed her to pursue a research project that aims to improve the health inequalities experienced by children with complex neurodisability and their parents/carers in East London, UK.
She has an interest in global health and the potential for knowledge transfer between low- and middle-income countries and high-income countries. Her PhD project is a co-adaptation of a group programme for parents/carers of children with complex neurodisability, originally developed in Uganda, for use in East London, UK. The original programme is 'Baby Ubuntu' and the adapted, UK specific programme is 'Encompass'
Kirsten received a distinction for her MSc in Evidence-Based Healthcare from the University of Oxford where she undertook a study exploring how play-based groups for children with cerebral palsy and their families influenced maternal wellbeing.
As part of her fellowship, Kirsten works part-time with the NHS community Occupational Therapy children's team in Newham.
