About
Overview
Alex McCaffrey is a doctoral candidate affiliated with the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre, CitAI, at the City, University of London, and is also engaged in collaboration with ENSTA Paris. Working under the supervision of Prof. Eduardo Alonso (City) and Prof. David Filliat (ENSTA Paris), Alex's research focuses on the problem of exploration in reinforcement learning. Utilizing models from computational neuroscience, the research aims to uncover novel insights and methodologies that bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical applications. The research is funded under the DSTL French-Anglo partnership.
In the final year of Alex's doctoral studies, the research has converged to a focus on Bayesian inference within the context of reinforcement learning. Specifically, the work aims to leverage Bayesian techniques to enhance artificial curiosity, a fundamental aspect of autonomous exploration. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of uncertainty, providing the means to create more robust and adaptable learning agents.
Alex holds a master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence from City, University of London, and a B.Sc. in Economics from University College London (UCL). During the master's program, Alex's thesis explored the use of evolutionary game theory to design biologically plausible neural networks, demonstrating a unique intersection of biological understanding and technological innovation. Furthermore, Alex has cultivated an appreciation for the synergies between AI and economics, both of which borrow and integrate interesting approaches from adjacent disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach has provided a comprehensive framework to explore the interplay between technology, game theory, and intelligence.
