Oleg Pantsjoha took part in the Professional Pathway (PP) scheme at City, University of London. He now works as a Platform Engineering Manager at Cazoo.
What made you decide to join the Professional Pathway scheme?
I wanted to experience university life while also immersing myself in the professional world to begin building my career. City, University of London’s Professional Pathway scheme struck just the right balance for me, providing a happy medium for both sides.
With its engaging hybrid approach, I was able to enjoy the best of both worlds, combining classroom learning with practical work experience – a perfect blend that kept me both educated and engaged.
What roles did you do whilst on the Professional Pathway scheme?
I was fortunate to be able to explore various roles and domains to broaden my horizons as a newcomer to the tech industry. I started my journey in Software Engineering, working as a Java Developer in the health and social care sectors for a year and a half, before transitioning into an Analyst Programmer role in another company that happens to be in the same sector, working there for another two and a half years.
How did the scheme help you find work on graduation?
Mohson Khan and the PP scheme not only furnished me with indispensable knowledge but also supplied me with a wealth of resources and vital industry connections. These key elements played an instrumental role in helping me secure my first official post-graduation role as a Quality Engineer. Through their unwavering support and expert guidance, they facilitated my growth and development, ultimately laying a solid foundation for my ongoing professional success in the field.
The scheme’s comprehensive approach enabled me to confidently navigate the complexities of the industry, equipping me with the skills and understanding necessary to excel in my career.
Describe your career journey since graduation.
My career journey since graduation has been filled with a variety of experiences that have allowed me to continuously grow and learn in the tech industry. Starting out as a Java Developer at Corelogic Ltd through the PP scheme, I gained hands-on experience in software development and was able to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of working in a diverse range of industries and roles, from Social & Health Care to E-commerce, in both individual contributor and management positions. Through these experiences, I have developed a unique skill set that has enabled me to effectively navigate and excel in different environments and challenges.
At Cazoo, I had the opportunity to work on critical business offerings, starting in an individual contributor role before being promoted to Engineering Manager. I was fortunate enough to lead a talented team that launched multiple key product offerings and improvements, resulting in increased efficiency and cost savings.
Throughout my career, I have always been eager to learn and improve, continuously seeking opportunities to develop new skills and mentor others. I am grateful for the experiences I have had and the knowledge I have gained, and I am always striving to grow and improve as a professional.
Are there any lessons you want to share with current Professional Pathway applicants?
Be open to new opportunities: My willingness to explore different roles and industries allowed me to develop a unique set of skills and experience, which helped me excel in different environments. If opportunities don't come knocking, take initiative and create your own.
Embrace a growth mindset and keep learning: Education doesn’t stop or start at school or university. I have continuously upskilled and learned new things throughout my career, whether it be through academic programmes or self-learning. It's essential to keep learning in the rapidly evolving tech industry to stay relevant and valuable to your employer.
Embrace change: My experience transitioning into different roles and industries has shown me that change can lead to growth and new opportunities. Embracing change, being adaptable, and open to new experiences can help you progress in your career.
Be a team player: You're likely to spend a good part of your day working with other people. It’s important that you learn how to collaborate effectively, and to leverage each other's strengths to achieve shared goals.
Seek out mentorship and feedback: Mentorship is an invaluable resource in the tech industry, and the PP scheme provides opportunities to connect with industry professionals who can offer guidance and support. Additionally, seek out feedback from your peers and managers to help you continually improve and grow in your role.
Remember, everyone faces challenges and setbacks at some point in their career (I personally was impacted by the Financial Crisis of 2008 and was made redundant). It's how you respond to these challenges that will ultimately determine your success. By embracing a growth mindset, seeking help and support, staying focused on your goals, and maintaining a positive attitude, you can overcome adversity and achieve your career aspirations.
