Ola O'Rourke took part in the Professional Pathway (PP) scheme at City, University of London. She now works as a Software Engineer at NatWest Group.
What made you decide to join the Professional Pathway scheme?
I joined the Professional Pathway scheme because I was keen to fast-track my professional experience whilst also getting paid. I wasn't totally sure what I wanted to do career wise, but PP gave me the option to try different roles in different industries.
What roles did you do whilst on the Professional Pathway scheme?
In my first PP year, I was a junior analyst for a company specialising in server performance and capacity management. In my second PP year, I was a junior tester for a web agency. It was here working closely with developers that I had my 'light bulb over the head' moment and knew I wanted to focus on the visual and interactive side of website and app development. In my final PP year, I was a junior front-end developer for another web agency.
How did the scheme help you find work on graduation?
During interviews with prospective employers, I was able to comfortably speak about the professional experience I had gained - it's a major advantage to have, and prospective employers are likely to be intrigued when they see it on your CV.
Describe your career journey since graduation.
Since graduating, I have continued to grow my career as a front end developer, exploring additional industries such as sustainability, financial planning and banking industries.
Are there any lessons you want to share with current Professional Pathway applicants?
Whether you decide to stay in one placement throughout the scheme or mix it up like I did, you will be gaining experience that will give you a career boost.
Outside of your employment, you'll need to be good at managing your time not just for university, but for your wellbeing and other personal commitments.
Any final message about the Professional Pathway scheme?
This is a really unique opportunity that can fast-track you into your chosen career path, or help you explore what you enjoy or don't enjoy doing. On reflection, I'm happy I did it!
