Maya Deering took part in the Professional Pathway (PP) scheme at City, University of London. She now works as a Transition Project Manager at Credit Suisse.
What made you decide to join the Professional Pathway scheme?
The Professional Pathway scheme was one of the reasons I chose to study at City, University of London. I had already been working for a few years before I started my degree so the idea of being without income for three years to do a degree was a bit daunting.
What roles did you do whilst on the Professional Pathway scheme?
I worked for a NGO set up to address Carbon emissions doing database maintenance. Followed by an IFA as their IT support until I joined a large bank in their front office technology department where I started doing Business Management and moved into a Business Analyst role.
How did the scheme help you find work on graduation?
I stayed at the bank and moved into a Project Manager role.
Describe your career journey since graduation.
I have stayed in banking but have moved from technology to operations, to compliance operations and now in a central change function. My core skill set is project and change management.
Are there any lessons you want to share with current Professional Pathway applicants?
PP is tough but rewarding! I remember spending time with work friends who couldn’t understand why I had to study all the time and university friends who couldn’t understand why I had to work all the time. It teaches you great time management skills. I really enjoyed putting into practice what I had leared in the lecture hall in the workplace.
Any final message about the Professional Pathway scheme?
It’s a fantastic opportunity!
