Lucas Crumb studied the Law LLB programme at The City Law School graduating in 2018.
What is your current role or position?
Managing Director - I manage the day-to-day activities of my company, Lux Jets.
What motivated you to pursue the LLB Law?
Personally, to justify going to university I wanted to study something that is both mentally challenging and has the potential to open up a variety of career opportunities. Law LLB ticked both of my requirements and I can confirm that Law LLB is indeed both mentally challenging and opens a plethora of opportunities.
At the time, working in the legal sector had been my ambition and to achieve that ambition an LLB in Law was the first hoop to jump through.
I had heard that Law LLB offered a detailed understanding of the foundations of law and allowed me to think critically of how 'the law' is to be interpreted.
Learning the subject and understanding the subject are two totally different species. With other degrees, the course if focused on learning the material required to successfully complete the degree, whereas LLB Law offered an opportunity to actually understand and make use of the material in pursuit of a career in law.
What opportunities and experiences did City, University of London offered you whilst you studied, or still offers you?
The opportunity to present a moot before a Court of Appeal judge is something which is not often experienced.
The City Law School put together a broad range of opportunities which are open for students to selectively attend but they all share the same purpose, to extend your skills as budding lawyers.
Each year, The City Law School would invite a variety of law firms to the campus to offer an opportunity for the students to connect and enquire with members of the firms.
This was particularly useful when applying for vacation schemes and training contracts as we'd already had the time to connect with the firms and seek inside knowledge of what each firm is looking for in candidates.
Were you involved in activities such as mooting, pro bono work or took part in a vacation scheme? If so, can you tell us about your experience and their benefits to you?
I took part in both legal extra-curricular actives as well as sporting activities. Once I had learned that City offered an American football team, I quickly signed up to try a sport which isn't very popular in the UK. The camaraderie which comes with joining a sports team is second to none.
Taking part in the mooting opportunities which The City Law School offered was fantastic and I genuinely developed my skills as a budding lawyer. Mooting allows you to practice critical thinking, litigious discussions and formulation of arguments - all things which are crucial for a successful legal career.
At one mooting event, The City Law School held the debate in front of a practicing Court of Appeal judge who then provided personal feedback on our performance.
Having the opportunity to sit before a Court of Appeal judge and moot is something which only The City Law School can provide!
Why did you choose The City Law School to study the LLB Law?
Knowing at the time that I wanted to pursue a career in law, being in the City of London was absolutely an important factor choosing The City Law School.
There is no substitute for being situated in the heart of London and I had learned that City had a campus in Chancery Lane at the time,as well as a long-established and prestigious Law School.
The City Law School offered fantastic extra-curricular networking events with City law firms who had a relationship with either the School or the lecturers.
Attending these networking events and speaking with established legal professionals is a priceless commodity that was offered to me by The City Law School.
At the time, I also resided on the commuter-belt of London and attending The City Law School allowed me to experience fairly early on what a normal commute into the City would be like.
Personally, I was attracted to the way that City operated as a university which is not the traditional large campus site that other universities offer.
Lastly, choosing a university with a solid foundation and respectable reputation was important for me. City ticked allthose boxes and I can definitely confirm that it lived up to its expectations.
Whenever I am asked which university I studied at, people are impressed when the answer is City, University of London.
Did you find our London location to be advantageous during your time with us?
Yes absolutely - being in the heart of London is immensely important. Unlike other universities who are on the fringes of the UK, being in London offered the opportunities to connect with law firms who are situated doors away from the Law School.
As a member of the University of London, law firms certainly paid extra attention to applications which are made for training contracts from London alumni. Further, the LPC course was, at the time, situated in Chancery Lane.
There's no doubt that being able to share a train carriage with lawyers whom you aspire to be like is an added bonus for sure!
What is your fondest memory of your time at City?
My fondest memory of City University was the day that I graduated and receiving my certificate. The emotion that I felt on that day is something which I have yet to experience again.
Law LLB is not an easy degree by any estimation and The City Law School ensure that you are taught law to the highest level and at the highest standard.
Finally qualifying with such a respectable degree from such a prestigious university is without question my fondest memory as a conclusion to 3 wonderful years at The City Law School.
