What was your main motivation to undertake postgraduate study?
I wanted to further my education in the legal field and to specialize more on specific subjects only offered at Master’s level. For me personally, my career direction has always steered towards teaching and academia, both requiring an LLM.
What were the factors that influenced your decision making when considering postgraduate study?
Time was the main influencing factor. I chose to undertake my Master’s after graduating from my undergraduate degree because I realised that I had free time before starting my professional career.
Why did you choose to study this course at City, University of London?
The City Law School is one of the leading legal institutions in the UK, with its law school dating back to the 19th Century. This was one of the main reasons. However, although postgraduate education can be quite costly, the 10% Graduate Loyalty Discount helped me make my decision to further my study at City.
What has been your student experience at City so far?
My experience at City has been the most profound. The student community is very welcoming at City that after a while it starts to feel like home. Furthermore, getting support is so easily obtainable. The Student Centre helps students settle into their new lives, from visa’s to accommodation there is absolute support from the beginning to the very end.
How has studying this course helped you to develop personally and professionally?
Professionally I have gained the skills necessary to advance my career and broaden my options. Studying this course has helped me gain an insight into what practicing law would be like, whilst also teaching me the basics of legal research. Moreover, being offered the chance to work on a dissertation topic of your choice teaches you how to be responsible and dedicated to a cause you are passionate about. Which shows you that you are capable of achieving what you set your mind to.
What skills and knowledge do you think the course has helped you develop?
While studying this course, my academic writing and critical thinking skills have developed greatly. Due to the practicality of the course as well as its theoretical content, I have become more analytical and more knowledgeable when dealing with legal studies.
What opportunities and experiences has City offered you during your course?
I had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. With City, University of London having students from over 150 different countries, it wasn’t hard to learn about different cultures and to experience diversity. I also had the opportunity to work part time during my studies as a student ambassador, in which I had the chance to enhance my social skills.
What are your career plans once you have completed your postgraduate degree?
My career plans are wide-ranging but I am focusing at the moment on working in academia and education. Obtaining a PhD is also in my plan.
How do you think City has prepared you for the next stage in your career journey?
The career and employment team have offered me constant support throughout my studies. From writing CV’s to attending interviews and making the right career options, City has helped me prepare for the workforce.
What advice would you give to people thinking about postgraduate study?
I would say it’s a decision in the right direction and an opportunity to broaden your knowledge. Go for it!
