Ellesya Myra Mohamad Redza is a Bar Vocational Studies (BVS) alumna at The City Law School.
What motivated you to pursue postgraduate study?
I wanted to complete the entire career path as a qualifying lawyer. Therefore, taking the Bar Vocational Studies (BVS) course was essential to obtain this qualification. I also wanted to develop my knowledge of the law before entering the working world.
Were there any challenges affecting your decision to study a postgraduate degree? If so, how did you overcome them?
My main challenge was deciding whether to continue studying or go back to Malaysia for my graduate employment scheme that I secured. I overcame this challenge by deciding my priorities in obtaining my life goals. I negotiated with my employer for a deferment to my graduate scheme offer which will be after I finish the BVS.
Why did you choose City?
My seniors told me that it was the best school to complete my BVS in. I also like the fact that City has provided a stable and supportive student support system throughout my BVS journey.
How are you finding studying in the UK?
I love studying in the UK because, as hard as it might sound, it actually reminds me a lot of Malaysia - except it's a colder version of it. Homesickness was inevitable but having my friends - both from Malaysia and new ones I made throughout my academic journey - has helped me through that.
What does a typical week at university look like for you?
I only go to campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Other than that, I would either have my client appointments with my Pro Bono clinic or study in my room. During the weekends, I make sure to spend time for either myself or with my friends exploring London and doing something fun just to take a break from my studies.
What has been your favourite module or aspect of your course so far?
My favourite module is Criminal Advocacy because one of my favourite teachers teaches that module. Even though I will never see myself as a criminal barrister, I enjoy the skills we learn in that class.
What knowledge and skills has your course helped you develop?
I have improved my communication skills, along with my legal writing skills and legal research skills.
What opportunities and experiences has City offered you so far?
It has offered me an opportunity to work for a pro bono clinic which I think is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had in my entire education. It has given me a chance to dip my toes into the working environment and apply the skills that I learn in the BVS.
What are your career plans and how has City prepared you for them?
My career plan is to complete my pupillage in Malaysia and practice back in Malaysia. City has prepared me for this by equipping me with the necessary skills for this journey. I feel like with the knowledge that I have gathered while studying in City, this will present as an advantage to me when I start working in Malaysia.
What advice would you give to someone considering a postgraduate degree?
Make sure you know and are prepared that the workload and work ethic going into a postgraduate degree is entirely different than undergraduate studies. Do not take work lightly and make sure what you are studying is what you want to pursue in the long run.
