What motivated you to study at university?
My motivation to study Law at City, University of London stemmed from my desire to acquire knowledge and skills that would enable me to make a meaningful contribution to society. Coming from a low socio-economical background, I saw university as a golden opportunity to challenge myself intellectually and develop a solid understanding of the law.
I also recognised that a university degree would enhance my career prospects, which was and still is extremely important to me as a black woman.
Why did you choose City for your LLB (Hons)?
Choosing City for my LLB was an easy choice because I've always wanted to study in the heart of London. This made it easy to commute when completing vacation schemes and mini pupillages in the city.
The university’s strong industry connections and commitment to fostering professional development also resonated with me - its careers service is unmatched, and each careers consultant goes above and beyond to help you with your job applications, practice Watson Glaser tests and prepare for an interview or assessment centre.
What is the best film or TV show with a legal theme that you have watched and why?
It has to be "The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story". The series is absolutely brilliant and it depicts the OJ Simpson murder trial with such detail, you can almost feel what some of the characters are going through.
The show expertly captured the complexities of the criminal justice system in the US, the media frenzy, the racial tensions and it taught me that women can’t escape feminism, even when they’re in the courtroom. It also showcased the art of advocacy, the power of storytelling and the impact both elements can have on public perception and the pursuit of justice.
What opportunities and experiences has the rest of City offered you so far?
City has provided me with a wealth of opportunities and experiences beyond the classroom. As a Senior Student Ambassador, I had the privilege of representing the university and engaging with prospective students - this role honed my communication and leadership skills.
Through the CityBuddies programme, I fostered meaningful connections with fellow students and took steps to create a supportive community.
The City, University of London's Law Society offered valuable networking events and practical workshops, while City's location allowed me to take advantage of cultural offerings and fun activities in London.
Were there any challenges affecting your decision to study at university? If so, how did you overcome them?
One of the challenges I faced in pursuing a university education was the financial aspect. However, I proactively sought scholarships and part-time employment opportunities to alleviate this burden. Through diligence and perseverance, I was able to secure a scholarship based on academic merit and did my best to manage my finances.
I also sought guidance from City's support services, such as the Student Support, who provided valuable advice and resources to help me navigate any obstacles along the way.
