Victoria is a conversation analyst who has a strong interest in communication in healthcare interactions. Her most significant research contributions are in the context of end of life interactions and palliative care more generally with a specific focus on hospice care. Victoria’s current project explores how healthcare practitioners introduce the topic of a hospice service with patients and their families when the end of life nears.
Working for the University of Nottingham (2014-2021) and then Loughborough University (2018-2021), Victoria used the perspectives and methods of CA to analyse audio-visual recordings of hospice consultations with a focus on how decisions and plans are made, challenged and revised to contribute towards giving patients a better end of life experience.
Victoria was a co-applicant on a NIHR Portfolio project (2017-2020) that used conversation analysis to understand how decisions are made during labour and childbirth. This study was conducted by an interdisciplinary team between University of York (Department of Sociology), Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation trust.
