About

Overview

Dr Sally Stares joined City University in September 2014, as a lecturer in City’s Q-Step Centre. She previously worked in the Department of Methodology at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she taught quantitative data analysis. She is part of the teaching team for Q-Step modules for undergraduate students, and Director of the SASS-wide MSc in Research Methods.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Social Psychology, London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom
  • MSc in Research Methods (Social Psychology), London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom
  • MA in Social and Political Sciences, University of Cambridge (Murray Edwards College), United Kingdom

Research

Research Interests

Dr Stares’ research is focused on the theme of social measurement, particularly of social attitudes, perceptions and values. She is interested in how empirical analysis informs and improves our understanding of the concepts that are the architecture of social science research. Her work entails three lines of enquiry: a technical focus on the use of multivariate analyses; a substantive goal of yielding the best insights on public perceptions from (primarily) survey data; and a reflective component commenting on the uses of quantitative evidence by a range of actors within and outside academia.

Her current research is focussed substantively on public opinion on science and technology, particularly on autonomous vehicles and automated journalism.
