About
Overview
Rafiah is a Highly Specialist Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) based at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Over the years, Rafiah has developed a keen interest in the role of technology across health, education and social care and more specifically within SLT. She is particularly interested in exploring the impact of technology on the wellbeing of those that use it as well as the role of co-design when developing digital tools for service-providers and service-users.
In 2019, Rafiah began an NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship. Her PhD which she is completing part-time, builds on her digital interest and growing expertise by exploring language, behaviour and wellbeing outcomes of a user co-designed digital vocabulary intervention for child language disorder. Her supervisors are Prof Shula Chiat, Martin Cartwright, Dr Jackie Mcrea and Stephen Parsons. As part of her PhD, she has been awarded an Engage Student place at the Alan Turing Institute.
Rafiah is currently developing her research website using co-design principles. For this work she has partnered with Duncan Barron, PPI Lead, Centre for Public Engagement, St George's University and Big Lemon: App Development and Web Design company who Rafiah met through an NHS Hack Day event in Jan 2020.
During the pandemic, Rafiah has worked to support clinicians with remote working. As part of this she is the lead author on the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist’s COVID-19 Telehealth Guidance. She is currently on a part-time secondment at NHSX where she is supporting the digital transformation of community outpatients’ services.
