About
Overview
Mai is a Lecturer in Computer Science at the giCentre, where she designs, develops, and evaluates visualisation solutions to support decision making. Her research focuses on the role of visualisation in democratising access to and engagement with data by non-technical users. She works closely with healthcare practitioners, local authorities, and school representatives to co-design new visual tools that promote data-driven decisions. She has particular interests in how the lived experience of these stakeholders can inform visualisation design.
Mai received her PhD in Visualisation from the Centre for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech in 2015. Her PhD research emphasized the important interplay between studying people’s data needs, carefully designing interactive visualization methods that support those needs, and rigorously evaluating the resulting impacts. To ensure impact, she actively collaborated with multiple domain experts in various disciplines, including geospatial scientists and neuroscientists. The value of her approach was recognized with both Department- and University-level achievement awards.
Before coming to City, she held a NSF-funded postdoctoral fellowship at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, a NIHR-funded research fellowship at the University of Leeds, and a lectureship at the University of Bradford.
Throughout her postdoctoral and independent research, Mai has maintained a commitment to user-centred visualisation research. This has led her to undertake several roles through which she engages regularly with visualisation stakeholders. She is a University of Bradford Honorary Senior Research Fellow, member of the scientific advisory board at the Wolfson Centre for Applied Health Research, member of the NIHR-funded Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Research Collaboratory, and sits on the Steering Group for the Leeds Centre for Applied Education Research.
Her independent research has so far been funded by the Bradford Institute for Health Research (BIHR), NIHR, and internal university development funds (including EPSRC doctoral training funds). She publishes her work at top venues in the field of visualisation, including IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), Visual Computer, Computer Graphics Forum, IEEE Visualization Conference, and Symposium on Large Data Analysis and Visualization (LDAV).
