About
Overview
Dr. Benard Ohene-Botwe is a Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography at City, University of London. Additionally, he serves as the Co-Director of Postgraduate Programme in Radiography, which involves CT and MRI studies here at City, University of London.
Prior to joining City, Benard worked as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana. As an academic, he has served in many capacities, including the Departmental Examination Officer, Postgraduate Studies Coordinator in Radiography, Research Coordinator, Clinical Practice Coordinator, Exams Board Member, Special Admissions Committee Member, Module leader (both undergraduate and postgraduate), and External Examiner.
He began his radiography journey at the University of Ghana and completed his master's degree in radiography at Cardiff University in the UK. His Ph.D. focused on the Development of National Indication-Based Diagnostic Reference Levels and Optimization Methods for Computed Tomography Examinations. This research was undertaken at the University of Ghana with an exchange study at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Benard is an experienced radiographer with over 15 years of experience and has broad clinical expertise in Conventional Radiography, Fluoroscopy, Computed Tomography, and Interventional Radiography. Before transitioning to academia, he served as a lead CT and Interventional radiographer, playing a pivotal role in groundbreaking procedures conducted by the Interventional Radiology and Surgical teams in Ghana. Some of these pioneering procedures include Endovascular Aneurysm Repair, Interventional Fibroid Embolization, Tubal Blockage Recanalization, Microwave Tumour Ablation, and Liver transplant, among others.
He conducts research in Radiography/Medical Imaging/Radiology and Public Health, and has over 60 publications of which over 50 are in Scopus-based journals. His current research interests focus on Patient and Staff safety, particularly concerning Computed Tomography studies, including Indication-Based Diagnostic Reference Levels, Acceptable Quality Dose (AQD), and Radiation Protection and Optimization. Other areas of his research include Artificial Intelligence, Cancer diagnosis, and workforce development and retention to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 3. His recent research also includes sustainability issues.
Benard also serves as an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Science (JMIRS) and as a peer reviewer for many journals, including INSIGHT INTO IMAGING, Radiography, BMC Health Services Research, JMIRS, and Journal of Radiation Research and Applied Sciences.
He currently serves as a mentor of the Formal Radiography Research Mentoring (FoRRM) scheme of the College of Radiographers (CoR), which aims to increase the research capacity and quality of radiographers in the UK
He is also an international consultant on the development of indication-based diagnostic reference levels, particularly in computed tomography, and a recipient of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists’ Chesney-ISRRT Research Award.
