The City of London and City, University of London
City University London has unique and deep-rooted links with the City of London.
Links with the City of London
City, University of London is the university of the City of London. Based in the heart of London, City has always had strong, intrinsic links with the Square Mile, which is where London started the financial and commercial heart of Britain.
Our close ties with the many world-leading financial and professional institutions on our doorstep are a vital factor in ensuring that:
- Our courses fit the changing professional needs of globalised business
- Our students have opportunities for work placements with major employers
- Our graduates have excellent employment prospects.
Our links with the City of London date back to 1894, when the Earl of Northampton set up the Northampton Institute to promote industrial skills, with the backing of various London livery companies.
City and the Lord Mayor of London
The Lord Mayor of London is also the Rector of City, University of London. Every year a new Lord Mayor is elected Alderman Peter Estlin became the 691st Lord Mayor of the City of London and Rector of City, University of London on Friday on 9th November 2018.
As has been tradition for the last 688 years, at the start of his term the new Lord Mayor travelled through the streets of London from Mansion House to Westminster to swear allegiance to the Crown. His carriage was preceded by a huge procession now known as the Lord Mayor's Show. City, University of London is proud to be a part of this historical procession every year and City Student Ambassadors also take part in the procession.
Every year our Rector, the Lord Mayor of London, holds a dinner for friends, supporters and staff of City at the Mansion House, the Lord Mayor's living, working and entertainment space.
