All members of staff have the right to belong or not to belong to any trade union of their choice.
City, University of London recognises three trade unions as follows:
- University and College Union - Academic and Academic Related Staff;
- Unite - Technical and Maintenance / Clerical and Certain Related Staff;
- UNISON - Clerical and Certain Related Staff and Manual and Ancillary Staff.

UCU - Academic and academic related staff
The University and College Union (UCU) is the largest union for academic and academic-related staff in the UK. It is recognised by City, University of London as representing lecturers, researchers and professional staff in the administrative, library and computing services.
Joining a trade union means you are able to access help, support, and even legal advice if you encounter any problems or have any questions about your employment.
UCU at City
At City, UCU is the trade union for academic staff, professional staff at grade 6 or above, and postgraduate students. Membership starts from about £5 a month. You can join UCU if you are a member of another union (NUJ, RCN, etc.) at a reduced rate.
Along with the other trade unions, UCU represents the interests of all staff at City and negotiates collectively on behalf of all staff to secure a fair deal for employees and to protect their terms and conditions of work.

Drop-in services
UCU at City holds a weekly drop-in service on Mondays from 12:30 to 13:30 in the Union Office, B408.
Unite - Technical and maintenance, clerical and related staff
Unite is one of the three recognised unions at City, University of London, representing admin, clerical and technical staff.
Amicus and T&G merged to form Unite.

UNISON - Clerical and related staff and manual and ancillary staff.
UNISON is the UK's largest public service union, with over 1.3 million members, representing workers across Higher Education, Health, Local Government, and non-profit sectors.
UNISON is one of the three recognised trade unions for staff at City, University of London.
At City, UNISON represents professional services and clerical staff as well as manual and ancillary staff.
City’s UNISON Branch Committee is made up of volunteers who are staff members at City, who offer support to UNISON members such as employment-related advice, representation and negotiation within City's management on your behalf.
UNISON at City also organises occasional open staff meetings for members giving the opportunity to network with colleagues from across the institution.
Join UNISON and you'll be entitled to all of the support services that the national trade union provides, as well as personal advice and assistance from the UNISON Branch Committee here at City.
Membership of the union can be paid either by Direct Debit or deduction from your monthly paycheck, and the monthly fee is graded according to your salary.
You can join UNISON online or ask for a physical application form from a member of the Branch Committee.
