About City

The City of London and City, University of London

City University London has unique and deep-rooted links with the City of London.

Links with the City of London

City, University of London is the university of the City of London. Based in the heart of London, City has always had strong, intrinsic links with the Square Mile, which is where London started the financial and commercial heart of Britain.

City livery companies, representing London trades and associations, have supported us for over 100 years, and the Lord Mayor of London is our Rector.

Our close ties with the many world-leading financial and professional institutions on our doorstep are a vital factor in ensuring that:

  • Our courses fit the changing professional needs of globalised business
  • Our students have opportunities for work placements with major employers
  • Our graduates have excellent employment prospects.

City's origins

Our links with the City of London date back to 1894, when the Earl of Northampton set up the Northampton Institute to promote industrial skills, with the backing of various London livery companies.

City and the Lord Mayor of London

We maintain our close relationship with the City of London through a range of activities:

  • Our students attend graduation ceremonies within the magnificent surroundings of Guildhall.
  • Every November, City Student Ambassadors take part in the Lord Mayor's Show.
  • Every year our Rector, the Lord Mayor of London, holds a dinner for friends, supporters and staff of City at the Mansion House, the Lord Mayor's living, working and entertainment space.

London livery companies

The livery companies of London represent a unique collection of trade and craft associations, many of which have flourished in the capital for centuries.

Two livery companies - The Worshipful Company of Saddlers and The Worshipful Company of Skinners - supported the establishment of the Northampton Institute, the forerunner of City, University of London.

We are grateful to the many City livery companies that currently support City, University of London. Our supporters include:

  • The Worshipful Company of Constructors' Lecture Series
  • The Worshipful Company of Cutlers' Bursary
  • The Worshipful Company of Engineers' Cadzow Smith Engineering Award
  • The Worshipful Company of Needlemakers' Award
  • The Worshipful Company of Saddlers' Bursary
  • The Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers' Edwards Lecture.
