Tier 4 English language requirements

All applicants that require a Tier 4 visa must meet the minimum Home Office English Language ability requirements before City can issue the Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS) that is needed to apply for a Tier 4 visa.

Please note these are the minimum Home Office requirements and in addition to these there are course-specific English language requirements which are likely to be higher. Details of these can be found on the individual course pages.

English ability can be confirmed in the following ways:

i. Applicants that are a national of a majority English-speaking country as defined in Home Office 'Tier 4 of the Points Based System - Policy Guidance'.

Majority English-speaking countries - In terms of nationality:

iii. Accepted English language test

City, University of London accepts the following. Please note, City cannot accept any other qualifications in addition to these:

TestsLevel

IELTS Academic*

Minimum 5.5 in each of the test areas. The test needs to have been taken no longer than two years from the date that the CAS is generated.

City, University of London is currently accepting IELTS from all test centres and not just those identified by UKVI on  the SELT list.

IELTS UKVI*

Minimum 5.5 in each of the test areas. The test needs to have been taken no longer than two years from the date that the CAS is generated.

Pearson test*

51 in each area. The test needs to have been taken no longer than two years from the date that the CAS is made.

Trinity College (Integrated Skills)*

ISE11 – pass in each of the areas. The test needs to have been taken no longer than two years from the date that the CAS is made.

IGCSE*

iGCSE English as a First Language (Syllabus 0500 & 0522) and iGCSE English as Second Language (Syllabus 0510 & 0511)  - Grade C or above.

IB*

English as a first language when taken at 'Standard Level' with 4 points.

IB*

English as a second language when taken at 'Higher Level' with 4 points.

INTO & Kaplan Pre-sessional  and foundation courses*

Pass and at least 5.5 in each area of testing.

Cambridge English Advanced (also known as Certificate in Advanced English)*

Minimum score of 162 or above in all areas (Level B2).

Cambridge English Proficiency (also known as Certificate of Proficiency in English)*

Minimum score of 162 or above in all areas (Level B2).

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) English Language Examination*

Minimum Level 3 or above.

INTO & Kaplan Pre-sessional  and foundation courses*

Pass and at least 5.5 in each area of testing (for pre-sessional students).
At  least 55% in each area (for Foundation students).

*Validity of the exam no older than two years from the date that the CAS is made.
