Chris Reading

Electroacoustic Composition MA

Planning your time around composing, writing and other activities is a valuable skill in itself.

Can you tell us a bit about what you're doing now?

I’m a film sound designer but have in the last year moved through into directing. I try to keep myself busy with as varied a life as possible. I wrote and directed my first feature film Somnus last year and that is currently doing the film festival circuit. I’m also writing a TV series and directing some more commercial material between projects. I make sure to I’m always working on at least one interesting sound/music project, mostly to film.

Why did you decide to study at City, and how did it help you get to where you are today?

I wanted to study in a city centre location; an out of town campus was not attractive to me. With City, all of the cultural opportunities of London are on your doorstep, this proved very conducive to building a creative career during the course and after I graduated.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

I enjoyed developing the self-discipline that a composition MA requires. Planning your time around composing, writing and other activities is a valuable skill in itself.

Were there any lecturers who particularly inspired you?

I always enjoyed working and talking with Prof. Denis Smalley, I think we share a similar taste in film. He along with Prof. Steve Stanton changed the way I thought about music and had a big impact on how I work today.

What are your long term career plans?

I want to go on making films and sounds until I’m old.

Do you have any advice for someone who might be considering this course?

If working in a totally creative and supportive environment is an attractive proposition to you, then you should consider City. The staff there offered me a wide and relevant foundation for the work I’m now doing, and I thoroughly enjoyed being in the City Music environment.
