Creative Writing and Publishing
Carlie Sorosiak graduated from City in 2015

I chose City for its emphasis on professional services. I knew that I could step from City directly into a publishing career...

What do you do now? What do you enjoy about what you do?

I write novels for teens about love, loss, and science. My first novel, If Birds Fly Back, is out with Macmillan UK in June. I have the best career in the entire world! Seeing my characters come to life is incredible—and I love when readers connect them.

What path have you taken to get there? Were there any particular areas of interest that lead to you specialising?

While at City, I interned at Faber & Faber; that internship led to an editorial assistant position in their children’s department. I’ve always loved young adult literature, so it was a perfect fit for me. I met my literary agent in the Faber office!

Why did you choose to study at City, University of London and how has it helped you?

I chose City for its emphasis on professional services. I knew that I could step from City directly into a publishing career—and that’s exactly what happened!

What did you enjoy most about your course?

The best part about my MA was the interaction with the other students—intelligent, creative, supportive people. I couldn’t have completed my book without them. I also had fantastic mentors who helped me every step of the way.

What was the hardest part of your course?

I had to wear two different hats! Sometimes I was a publisher, other times a creative writer; I had to learn to find a balance between the two.

What was your favourite part of being a City Student?

The opportunities for work placements are stellar—and the other students are just wonderful. I made some of my best friends at City.

If you could give one piece of advice to a prospective City publishing student, what would it be?

If you want a foot in the door to the publishing industry, do this course; you won’t regret it.
