Mission Statement

The London Universities Maritime Law and Policy Research Group (LUMLP) is a non-profit making collaborative network of London academic institutions with research interests in Maritime Law and Policy, to discuss, disseminate and develop research in Maritime Law and Policy. LUMLP members are drawn from a wide range of academic and research institutions, professional groups, commercial organisations and individuals sharing a common interest in maritime law and policy.

How is it organised?

LUMLP membership operates at two levels - executive and ordinary. Executive members are open to London based institutions of higher education with a research interest in maritime law and policy. Each institution will be represented by one or two representatives, who shall be known as directors of LUMLP. The directors will form the Executive of LUMLP. Ordinary membership is open to individuals, organisations, and groups with an interest in maritime law and policy.

Prof. Jason Chuah
The City Law School, City University London

Jason ChuahJason is Head of Academic Law at The City Law School. He is on the Editorial Board for Journal of International Maritime Law (Lawtext), Shipping and Trade Law (Informa), International Company and Commercial Law Review (Sweet & Maxwell), International Trade Law and Regulation (Sweet & Maxwell) and Finance and Credit Law (Singlelaw). His articles have been cited by tribunals in the US, the EU and England, including the Court of Justice of the EU. He has written several books on commercial and maritime law.

Dr Minghua Zhao
University of Greenwich

Minghua ZhaoMaritime labour has been my main research subject since 1998. This includes women seafarers, seafarers on cruise ships, the labour market for seafarers especially that in China and in the Philippines, the political commissar and seafarers welfare in the PRC merchant fleet, seafarers family life, the institutional and technical change and their impact to the crew and communication on multinational crewed ships. I also have a strong interest in the social and economic transformation in China and its implications to the Chinese workers in shipping but also in other industries.

Susan Hawker
London Metropolitan University

Susan HawkerSusan is a Principal Lecturer in International Trade and Shipping law at London Metropolitan University, and Course Director of the Post Graduate Diploma in Maritime Law, which is offered on a distance learning basis, in collaboration with Informa PLC.

After qualifying as a barrister, Susan worked in P & I, before going into academia. She is currently also the academic consultant to the Grain and Feed Trade Association (GAFTA). Susan regularly speaks at and chairs shipping related seminars. Current academic research includes writing a chapter on International Sale of Goods for a book on Commercial Law to be published by Pearsons in 2009.
