Is parity possible?

A thought-provoking panel discussion with leading female academics who have research or expertise in the field of women in leadership. Our panellists discussed how the situation is improving in certain areas, whether we will reach a sticking point and what could or should be done to break through the barriers.

BAME Networking Group event with Bonnie Greer OBE

A 2015 report found that there are 17 black female professors in the entire HE system.

72% of white students get a First or Upper Second degree.

53% black students get the same degree classification even when they enter intitutions with the same A level grades

Successful women in the workplace: How to shine?

Brought to you by the Careers department

Aimed at both students and staff, this panel event aimed to help women plan and become more successful in their chosen careers. After all, being seen as an equally capable economic performer is key to being seen as an equally valuable person.

The panel was made up of inspirational women in senior roles from a range of industries such as IT, arts and social sciences, law and finance, who shared their insights and experience to help women shine when applying for jobs and once established in the workplace.

CV booster sessions for Lawyers

The female lecturers of the undergraduate LLB programme ran a 10 minute drop in CV booster clinics (open to all genders) at an International Women’s Day party.


Inclusive Leadership drop in session for managers

Unconscious bias affects every area of our lives. Unconsciously, we tend to like people who look like us, think like us and come from backgrounds similar to ours. Research has shown that the beliefs and values gained from family, culture and past experience influence how we view and evaluate others and ourselves.
This Q&A session, hosted by City’s HR staff explained the concept of unconscious bias and City’s approach to limiting its influence on our staffing decisions. It was aimed at all those who directly manage staff to give them a greater understanding of the issues and to allow them to register for full training.


CityUniWomen presents 'Impostor Syndrome: Ever Feel Like a Fraud?'


Ever feel that you’ve fooled others into believing you are smarter than you are, that your success is due to factors other than your own competency, and that pretty soon you’re going to be found out? These three tendencies combined can characterise Impostor Syndrome (IS; also referred to as the Impostor Phenomenon), particularly when experienced by those who are evidently successful. We all have self-doubt from time to time, but when these feelings persist they can lead us to behave in ways that negatively impact our performance and wellbeing. In this talk the City Women's Network discussed triggers to IS, typical thoughts and behaviours associated with IS, and strategies for overcoming it.

Dr Vicky Ellam-Dyson is a coaching psychology practitioner and academic involved in a range of developmental activities including: coaching, training, lecturing and research supervision. Her work is informed by her doctoral research into the psychology of leadership, where she explored how embedded core beliefs can influence leadership behaviours (decision making, communicating, delegating, influencing, etc). She has a particular interest in perfectionism and impostor syndrome and enjoys working with clients to overcome these barriers.

Vicky is an associate lecturer and research supervisor at City in coaching psychology and organisational psychology. She is also a visiting tutor at Cass Business School, where she facilitates experiential workshops in leadership and team-working skills for postgraduate business students.

She is a sub-committee member of the British Psychological Society's Special Group in Coaching Psychology (BPS SGCP) and a founder committee member of the International Society for Coaching Psychology (ISCP).
