Biography

Abigail is a Speech and Language therapist who trained at UCL and graduated in 1991. Her area of clinical interest and expertise is children with speech and language disorders.  Abigail has worked within various PCTs in the Greater London area. She operated as clinical lead for speech and language therapy to secondary schools before joining City University in 2003. She continues to be involved in research collaboration within the university and externally with London colleagues. 

Abigail is currently the Deputy Director of Professional Education within the department and is the driving force behind the placements programme. She collaborates closely with University College London in order to facilitate a smooth placement experience for the students. She also provides input and advice in planning and management of the wider Professional Studies scope for both the undergraduate and post graduate pre-registration programmes. Abigail is also Module Leader for Social Context module for BSc first year, and Professional Studies for the BSc second year. Additionally, she is responsible for supervision of student research projects at the BSc Honours and MSc levels. 

Research interests

Abigail is particularly interested in the outcomes of intervention for speech and language difficulties within the paediatric population. This includes evaluation of therapy techniques, the application of psycholinguistic theory to practice, and speech and language therapists working within education settings. Abigail has recently commenced her PhD studies, focusing on evaluating specific interventions for non typically developing children.  

Teaching Interests

Teaching interests include developing case-based learning modules for student learning focusing on applying theory to practice, particularly in the area of child speech and language disorders. On a broad scale, Abigail is very interested in how students apply academic knowledge to clinical placement settings. To this end, she has secured funding and contributed to the development various mechanisms for student feedback related to clinical practice.    

External activities

Abigail is chair of the National Group of Directors of Professional Education and is responsible for convening and disseminating information nationally regarding student clinical education. She regularly attends the London Managers' Meeting in order to maintain current insights into workforce issues.
