About
Overview
Ben joined City, University of London in May 2015 as a Lecturer in Biological Sciences. He is part of the biology team and the mental health team within the Division of Nursing.
He has a broad background in mental health nursing, having worked in acute, forensic, Huntington's Disease, neuro-rehab and neuro-behavioural settings. Additionally, he has worked as a clinical educator, providing training in basic life support, moving and handling, epilepsy management, medicines management and preceptorship.
His scientific background has been in the field of clinical genetics, having studied Human Genetics at the University of Nottingham and Genetic Counselling at the University of Manchester. Since joining City, he has developed a passionate interest in translational psychiatry (studying areas of medicine that impact mental health, outside of the realm of conventional neuroscience).
He has worked previously at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham; Alpha Hospital, Bury, Greater Manchester and Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, Putney, London.
Qualifications
MSc in Genetic Counselling, Diploma in Mental Health Nursing and Bsc (Hons) in Human Genetics.

Pre-Reg. Nursing Biology Teaching (BSc & MSc)
HS1922: Ben leads this Anatomy and Physiology module. He also lectures on nervous and endocrine systems, fundamentals of genetics and genomics, and microbiology.
HSM002: Ben lectures on fundamentals of genetics and genomics, and takes small group anatomy and physiology tutorials on a number of subjects.
HS2007 & HSM004: Ben lectures on the biological basis of a variety of mental health conditions, and on clinical genetics.
HS3016 & HSM006: Ben lectures on a variety of general principles of prescribing, and on all psychopharmacology.

APM022: Ben lectures on clinical genetics and the biological basis of neurodegenerative conditions.

Practice Assessment and Supervision
CH3010: Ben is module lead for this stand-alone post-registration CPPD module. It provides allied health professionals with an HEI-accredited certification (with or without credits) to become a Practice Assessor for student nurses and other appropriate learners.
Pre-reg Nursing Associate Teaching
NA1005: Ben leads this module that helps students understand the experiences and needs of individuals affected by long-term health conditions and enduring mental illness.
Ben also lectures on psychopharmacology and mental health / neurological pathophysiology on a number of other NA modules.
Dissertation Supervision
HSM009: Ben tends to supervise student who choose to focus their studies on pharmacological interventions for mental health conditions.
