Halls of residence Liberty Hall

General

This residence is offered exclusively to City, University of London first year undergraduate students by Liberty Living, a third party housing provider. Students who are offered accommodation at Liberty Hall will sign an agreement with Liberty Living and not with City, University of London, and will therefore be bound by Liberty Living's terms and conditions (PDF) of residence.

Main features

  • Liberty Hall offers single en-suite rooms with shared kitchens and common areas exclusively to City students.
  • Rooms are approximately 12 m2, with four feet double beds.
  • All single en-suite rooms are fully fitted to a high standard and include an 3-4 m2  en-suite bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin plus separate telephone and data points for high-speed Internet access.
  • Bedroom furniture includes bed, mattress, wardrobe, desk, chair and bedside cabinet.
  • Kitchens are 14- 25 m2 and include dining table and chairs, electric ovens and four-ring hob/extractor fan, fridge freezer and microwave, shared between three to ten students.
  • Accommodation for students with mobility support needs is available.
  • Approximately 10 minutes' walk from City's main building at Northampton Square.

In addition, all halls have the following features:

  • 24-hour CCTV in operation and security guard on duty out of hours

Please note: We are currently witnessing a rise in residential developments and associated building works in the local area. We anticipate that there will be some noise pollution over the year and urge any prospective residents to take note of this.

What is included in the cost of the rent?

  • Utility bills (water, electricity, heating)

  • Contents insurance with Endsleigh Insurance

What is not included?

  • Telephone bill
  • TV licence (please see the TV Licensing website for information on if you need a license and how to obtain one)
  • Bedding (sheets, pillow, duvet etc.)
  • Cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery in kitchens
  • All halls of residence are self-catered, therefore you are responsible for buying and preparing your own food.

City, University of London recognises that the cost of living and studying in London can be high. In order to make studying at City affordable and accessible to all our undergraduate students, City has introduced an accommodation subsidy to reduce the cost of its undergraduate halls of residence. The subsidised prices listed above will be available from September 2015.

*Please be aware that the prices we offer are artificially low due to the subsidy, rents on the private market are likely to be £50 to £75 higher per week. For more information on private housing please refer to the University of London’s Housing Guide.

Location

Liberty Hall is situated by the City Road Basin in the area of Islington and Clerkenwell.

You won't need travel far for food, drink or other necessities. As a central accommodation provider in London, Liberty Hall lies close to grocery stores, post offices, stationery shops and more. You will also find the many restaurants, bars and clubs of Upper Street and Shoreditch a short walk away.

The area is well served by bus routes, with a major bus interchange located near Angel Underground station.

Instalment Related

What are the rent instalment dates?

Rent instalment dates for 2017/18 academic year are: 16th September 2017, 9th January 2018 & 3rd April 2018.

How many instalments is the rent paid?

Rent is paid in one instalment or in three instalments for students with a UK guarantor.

Can I pay in instalments if I'm an international student?

You can only pay in instalments if you have a UK based guarantor.

How much do I need to pay for each instalment?

The amounts of each instalments are: 9th September 2017 £2519.40, 9th January 2018 £2445.3 & 3rd April 2018 £2445.30.

Do you need an UK Guarantor to pay instalments?

Yes, you do - all students wishing to pay in instalments must have a UK based guarantor.

What if I don't have an UK UK Guarantor to pay instalments?

You will need to pay in one instalment.

Payments

How can I pay for my rent?

You may pay by direct debit, bank transfer, debit/credit card, cheque or cash. The payments are made to Liberty Hall and not to City, University of London.

Can I pay by a bank transfer?

Yes you can. For bank details, please contact Liberty Hall after you have received your contract.

Are there charges for paying by credit card?

Yes you can. It will incur a 2% charge for use of credit card and international card payments.

I can't pay my 1st instalment as I'm waiting for my student loan to be confirmed, can I still move into my room?

Yes, however please note that every student is required to pay for the weeks of stay at the residence until their student loan comes through.

Is there a discount if I pay for my accommodation in full?

No.

Cancellations

Can I cancel my contract after I have moved in to the room?

If you book your room, and advise us after the 19th August 2017 that you want to cancel the room, you are liable for the rent until a replacement student is found to take over the room.

If you find a replacement student, you are able to transfer the contract and will not be liable for the accommodation fees. Liberty Hall does however have the right to keep £100 as a cancellation charge.

You would need to contact the Accommodation Team for further advice and to complete an Early Leaver's Form. For this Hall, the replacement Tenant must be a first year undergraduate on a full time course at City, University of London.

In certain exceptional circumstances, such as suspending your studies, it may be possible to arrange an exception. If you find yourself in a situation like this, please discuss your circumstances with the Accommodation Team so that they can advise you further.

How long before I receive a refund of rent if another student takes over my contract?

Refunds are processed within 28 days of the termination of your contract.

Housing Related

Is there any additional items I need to bring to the hall?

You will need to bring sheets, pillows and bedding, also all kitchen equipment and utensils. If you do not intend to bring this with you, you can also purchase packs from Liberty via a 3rd party company.

Can I have guests stay over?

Yes you can, one guest can stay two nights per week. You will need to liaise with management beforehand, and sign them in and out every time the leave.

Can I bring a TV with me?

You can bring a television with you, however it is your responsibility to make sure you have paid for a TV license.

What if I am unhappy with my room, can I change?

Unfortunately it is not possible to swap rooms in hall, if you have issues with the room you have been allocated please contact the hall management.

What if I want to extend my stay?

It is possible to extend your stay, but you will have to pay the applicable summer rate for 2017 this £235. If you would like to extend your stay please contact the hall management.

Is there a cleaning service available?

No.

What are the laundry charges?

The laundry costs £2.80 per wash and £1.50 per dry.
