A professional events planner makes the difference

"The course exceeded my expectations. I learnt that the basic principles of a successful event were similar around the world and was given heaps of very useful, practical tips."

My name is Abena. It is a West African name that Akan people give to a girl born on a Tuesday. I am currently working as a marketing and events volunteer for an employment charity.

I took a Major Events Management short course at City.

My career path has given me the opportunity to work on events and projects aimed at creating brand experiences for consumers; however, most of my knowledge has largely been acquired through work in the African market. I was curious to see things from a different perspective and learn from people from various cultures and diverse professional backgrounds. This course gave me just what I needed.

The reason I chose City was simple: if you go for the best, you get the best.

I found the course by sheer luck. I was due for training at my job in my home country and it occurred to me that it would be nice to travel out of Africa for a change. I searched online for courses and when City came up as one of the choices I didn’t need any convincing as I knew it had a great record.

The best part of the course was the diversity of the class in experience and culture.

My tutor, Liam Devine, was patient and attentive to each student. His examples were practical and we could all relate to them, although we came from different areas of expertise. He also made himself available after class hours if you needed advice on a project or anything else related to the course.

My classmates were nice and friendly. We did some group work that encouraged us to engage with each other. We also got on very well outside of the class. Some of us are still in touch on Facebook.

The course exceeded my expectations. I learned that the basic principles of a successful event were similar around the world and was given heaps of very useful, practical tips.

Gaining a different perspective on the job that I love gave me more confidence in my line of work. It improved my reporting and documentation processes and I developed a more robust approach to planning for projects.

Recently, cupid caused me to relocate to the UK and I am currently volunteering in events and marketing where I am constantly encouraged to apply what I learned at City and my previous job.
