The Adult Nursing degree is designed for students who are looking for a rewarding and challenging career within the healthcare sector. We will help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to care for adult patients in a variety of hospital and community settings.
Graduates must meet eligibility criteria to gain registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
The BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing degree prepares you for a career caring for adults of all ages who have suffered accidents and been injured, acquired infections and developed diseases or have a range of healthcare needs. As an adult nurse you need to be committed and dedicated with the willingness to give time to others with care, empathy and compassion.
Teaching includes a combination of classroom theory, simulated practice and clinical placements. Simulated practice takes place within our well-equipped Clinical Skills Centre at our Northampton Square campus, a facility designed especially for students to practice their skills in a safe environment.
As a City student you will benefit from clinical placements at London’s leading healthcare Trusts. Your placements will occur in settings including hospital wards, specialist units, community and rapid response teams, acute and emergency departments, GP practices and within patients’ homes. This range of placements will help you develop the skills and confidence to deal with the many different environments Adult Nurses work in. Choosing to study in London also means that you will gain experience working with the diverse range of patients and conditions treated within the capital.
From September 2020 eligible students studying undergraduate and postgraduate pre-registration nursing, midwifery and many allied health courses, including radiography and speech and language therapy, will receive a non-repayable and non-means tested (universal) grant of at least £5,000 a year.

This course has been approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). On successful graduation you will be eligible to apply for registration with the NMC, which provides an internationally recognised professional qualification enabling you to practice in the UK and overseas.
Additional qualifications may be required in some countries.

Pass in a QAA recognised Access to HE Diploma in a Nursing, Health, Science, or Social Care subject NOT Nutrition or Paramedic Studies with full award (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at Level 3 including 24 credits at Distinction. Applicants must also hold either GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C (4) or above, or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 2. Other equivalent English Language and Mathematics qualifications will be reviewed on an individual basis.
Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend a Selection Day held at City, University of London before an offer can be made. At the Selection Day applicants are interviewed to assess their values match those of the NHS constitution, as well as having the opportunity to find out more about the course from our staff and students. Special requirements: Students are required to have occupational health and enhanced DBS (disclosure and barring service) clearance. Academic and character references are also required.
If you do not meet the entry requirements for this course, you may be interested in our Introduction to Health Sciences course. Applicants educated outside of an English speaking country, without GCSEs are required to hold:
IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall with at least 7.0 in Writing, 7.0 in reading, 7.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Speaking.

Applications for degree courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can apply through your school or college using the Apply system, which enables you to submit your application directly to the UCAS website.
You can apply to up to five universities or institutions on the form. The UCAS code for City, University of London is C60.
Please take care to enter the correct course code when applying, particularly for subjects with a Foundation year or with BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) and MSci (Hons) options.
UCAS has implemented an ‘invisibility of choices’ policy so that, on the initial application and while you are receiving decisions, each institution can see only their entry and not those of other institutions you have chosen. This ensures that your application for a course at City is considered solely on your academic and personal qualities.
You should submit your completed application form to UCAS with a £23 application fee. If you want to apply to City, University of London only, you can make a single choice application at a reduced rate of £12.
Applications for entry in September 2021 should be made between 1st September 2020 and 29th January 2021, in accordance with UCAS guidelines. We welcome applications after 18th January 2021, but you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as places may be limited.

Adult Nursing student Linda shares her experience of studying at City and her advice for future students.
Practice experience is a vital part of the BSc Adult Nursing degree and enables you to put theory into practice and use your skills in a variety of real life situations. You will spend approximately half of your degree course on placement.
Placements take place in London's leading hospitals and community settings including Barts Health NHS Trust, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, East London NHS Foundation Trust, North Middlesex University NHS Trust and leading independent hospitals. Whilst on placement you will have the opportunity to work in a range of departments and teams to develop your skills and potentially discover a specialist area where you would like to focus your career.
Whilst on placement you will be fully supported by City and will receive regular visits by your link lecturer (approximately once a week). You will also have a dedicated clinical placement facilitator within the workplace who will support your development whilst on placement. Many of our graduates work within London’s leading healthcare Trusts we partner with and are always happy to help a fellow City student.

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. You will have access to a simulated 6-bedded ward with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow students to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.
The School of Health Science is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio, City TECS. City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies providing City students with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies whilst they study.

The Adult Nursing degree is taught by academics who are experienced in their field of practice and education. Many are also leading researchers, directly influencing today’s practice; this means that you will study the most up-to-date curriculum and practices, directly from those informing the nursing profession.
The course is delivered using a blended approach which includes face to face and on-line teaching and learning. You will learn through lectures; seminar groups; laboratory practicals; practice experience; simulated practice; facilitated group work and enquiry-based learning opportunities with access to online course materials, resources, interactive activities and assessment and communication tools. The Clinical Skills Online (CSO) resource provides step-by-step video demonstrations on clinical skills.
Simulated practice will enable you to practise your skills in a safe environment in preparation in transferring these skills to a 'real life' setting.

On the BSc Adult Nursing course you will study a range of theoretical and practice modules. Alongside these, in your second year you will have the opportunity to choose an elective module, tailoring the course to your specific interests.
The first year focuses on the foundations for nursing and considers the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. Students are required to undertake practice placements.
In the second year, students focus on person-centered care and explore this theme in the context of acute and long-term care. Students can also pursue specific clinical interests on a two-week elective practice placement in addition to course clinical placements.

In the final year, the emphasis is on leading and managing in professional practice and becoming a proficient practitioner. Students undertake a 6,000-word dissertation. As part of the clinical placement experience, students spend the final 12 weeks of the course in practice and have a placement base and opportunities to identify practice experiences with their practice supervisors and assessor.
