This intermediate level course will help you to develop fluency in the Spanish language, understand grammatical structures and gain knowledge of Spanish culture.

Why choose this course?

You already have a good grounding in the Spanish language and want to continue your journey to develop your knowledge and perfect yours skills. In this course you will move past essential conversational Spanish and develop abilities to debate hypothetical scenarios; and discuss current affairs, history and culture.

The full course is made up of three 10-week modules – part 1, part 2 and part 3. Enrol on the full syllabus (parts 1-3) to gain a complete knowledge of intermediate Spanish at the best price. Our teaching takes place one evening a week, ideal for those with various commitments or working full-time.

Our language short courses are taught by qualified native speakers and delivered at City, University of London’s main campus, in the heart of the capital.

Course overview

You will continue to develop a command of the Spanish language using the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Grammar will be covered in context.

Homework will be set each week and will include exercises to practice what has been learnt in class, increase reading comprehension and prepare for the next class.

Topics will include:

  • language;
  • leisure;
  • current affairs.

To demonstrate speaking skills, you will give a presentation on a chosen theme. Debates and discussions on topical issues will be a key part of the course to further develop verbal skills.

You will listen to a range of authentically-spoken passages and conversations from different contexts at near native speed and are challenged to understand the main points. Complex, authentic texts from a range of different contexts will be read with the aim of understanding and reporting on the essential points.

Is it the right level for me?

The Spanish Intermediate (Year 3) course is ideal if you have completed the Spanish Lower Intermediate (Year 2) course or you have A-level experience of Spanish.

This course consists of three modules taught at progressive levels, starting with part 1 in October. We only advise joining part 2 or part 3 if you are already familiar with the content from earlier modules (see the What will I learn? section below for module content).

Part 1

Topics covered

Biography. The world of work in Spain. Spanish society, customs and stereotypes. Writing an email, take messages and pass them on. Talk about anecdotic situations.

Grammatical structures

  • Revision/contrast of all indicative past tenses
  • Reported speech
  • Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns
  • Connectors.

Learning objectives

  • Talk about habits, customs and circumstances in the past
  • Express the duration of an action
  • Express obligation and prohibition
  • Ask someone to pass on messages
  • Develop communication strategies.

Part 2

Topics covered

News and demonstrations. Tourism and anecdotal situations. Environmental issues. Food and Health. Family and relationships. Describing objects.

Grammar structures

  • Use of Present Subjunctive after verbs expressing feelings, need, desire, demand, wanting and advice.
  • Use of pluperfect
  • Present Subjunctive after verbs of feeling
  • Structures to express agreement and disagreement
  • Present Subjunctive in relative clauses.

Part 3

Topics covered

Debates about hypothetical situations. News, papers and mass media. Society and culture of Latin America. Fiestas and traditions in Spain.

  • Imperfect Subjunctive in if-clauses: introduction
  • The Conditional: Revision
  • The passive voice.

Learning objectives

  • Refer to an item in the news and comment about it

Prerequisite knowledge

The Spanish Intermediate short course is ideal if you have one of the following:

  • successfully completed Spanish Lower Intermediate Year 2 short course
  • approximately 100-120 hours of prior formal study
  • a rusty (but good) Spanish A-level.

Modules are taught at progressive levels, starting with part 1 in the autumn (October).

If you wish to join part 2 of the Spanish Intermediate short course (in January), you must have completed part 1 or be familiar with the content taught in part 1, specified in the What will I learn? section.

If you wish to enrol on part 3 of the short course (in April/May), you must have completed both part 1 and part 2 or be familiar with the content taught in these two modules, found in the What will I learn? section.

Teaching & assessment

Teaching & assessment

The emphasis in this course is on listening and speaking. The lessons focus on language that is required in authentic situations.

There is no formal assessment and no qualification is issued at the end of the course, but you will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course. You must attend over 70 per cent of the classes to be eligible for the certificate.

Classroom activities will include:

  • Role-playing
  • classroom discussion
  • pair and group work
  • work on pronunciation and intonation
  • grammar in context.

Class room discussion, pair and group work, project work, as well as grammar in context. Listening to audio clips and watching videos are an important element in our lessons. More comprehensive grammar exercises and reading texts are generally set as homework.

Your progress will be assessed on an on-going basis through homework and performance in class. You will receive verbal feedback from your lecturer when appropriate and written feedback with your homework.

  • Ramon Alvarez Gonzalez

    Ramon Alvarez Gonzalez has a BA (Hons) in Business and Economics, BA (Hons) in Linguistics, Master's degree in Librarianship, a Foundation Certificate in teaching Spanish to adults and CAP (equivalent to PGCE).

    Ramon has been teaching Spanish to adults since September 2001 in various institutions such as Morley College, City Lit and Bishopsgate Institute. He is currently teaching at City, University of London and is an examiner for the International Baccalaureate.
