The course comprises three modules set at progressive levels over the year.

Taught mostly in Italian, this language short course is perfect if you've taken our Italian Lower Intermediate course or have a good grasp of conversational Italian.

This Italian Intermediate (Year 3) course will teach more advanced grammar, revising the past tenses, and introducing the future, conditional and subjunctive tenses.

The course consists of one evening class a week for a total of 30 weeks. Spread across three modules, the Italian Intermediate short course is ideal for those with various commitments or working full time.

All of our language short courses are taught by qualified native speakers and delivered at City, University of London’s main campus, in the heart of the capital.

Course overview

Aspetta!”, “Non sto più nella pelle!”, “Basta così” and “Grazie!” are familiar phrases to you. You feel at ease with the basics but now you want to have a more sophisticated conversation in Italian.

Whether it is for your holidays, at work or for reading in Italian, this course is designed to improve fluency and understanding of the Italian language giving you the confidence to communicate in a social or work situation.

Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are built upon and advanced main points in Italian grammar are all covered.

Is it the right level for me?

The Italian Intermediate is ideal if you have completed the Italian Lower Intermediate course or have a good intermediate knowledge of Italian. You can check your level using our online guidelines.

The Italian Intermediate course is taught at progressive levels, starting with Module One in October. We only advise joining Module Two or Module Three if you are already familiar with the content from earlier modules (see the "What will I learn?" tab).

What will I learn?

What will I learn?

The course will be taught using the communicative approach, meaning that a great emphasis will be given to role plays, pair and group work, speaking and listening skills, students’ interaction, use of authentic material.

Students’ progress will be assessed through classroom activities and homework, which will be assigned on a weekly basis

Module 1

You will learn to talk about past holidays, give advice, discuss food preferences; and discuss health problems.

Grammar: Revision of the difference between passato prossimo and imperfetto; the imperative tense (formal, informal and negative)

Module 2

You will learn to talk about future events, make  a hypothesis, make promises, discuss working conditions/hours, apply for a job; and express wishes.

Grammar: The future tense, revision of the conditional tense

Module 3

You will be able to describe apartments/houses, express opinions and doubts, make comparisons about objects; and describe people, places or activities.

Grammar: Introduction of the subjunctive, comparisons

The Italian Lower Intermediate short course is ideal if you have:

Modules are taught at progressive levels, starting with Module One in the autumn (October).

If you wish to join Module Two of the Italian Intermediate short course (in January), you must have completed Module One or be familiar with the content taught in Module One, specified in the What will I learn? tab.

If you wish to enrol on Module Three of the short course (in April/May), you must have completed both Module One and Module Two or be familiar with the content taught in these two modules, found in the What will I learn? tab.

You will need to respond to instructions and read course documents in English.

Teaching & assessment

Teaching & assessment

The emphasis in this course is on listening and speaking. The lessons focus on language that is required in authentic situations.

There is no formal assessment and no qualification is issued at the end of the course, but you will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course. You must attend over 70 per cent of the classes to be eligible for the certificate.

Classroom activities will include:

  • Role-playing
  • classroom discussion
  • pair and group work
  • work on pronunciation and intonation
  • grammar in context.

Listening to audio clips and watching videos are an important element in our lessons. More comprehensive grammar exercises and reading texts are generally set as homework.

All evaluation will take place in a relaxed and informal setting.

The course will be based on units 5 -10 but the content of the course will be integrated with material created by the teacher, or hand-outs taken from other books.

    Veronica De Felice has a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (2009), a Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults (Goldsmiths, 2006) and a BA in Foreign Languages (Napoli, 2002).
