Italian Beginners (part 2)

In part 2, you’ll continue to grow your conversational skills to include topics of ordering food, arranging a meeting and buying a ticket.

You’ll develop more knowledge of Italian grammar, as you learn about regular and irregular verbs in the imperative, and the use of direct object pronouns. More elements of Italian culture are introduced into your learning.

You’ll practice and improve your listening, speaking and writing skills using a variety of interactive teaching methods and group work.

Who is it for?

You’ll need to know a little Italian already – approximately 20 hours of formal study. It is ideal if you have completed part 1 or studied a little Italian elsewhere. See our eligibility section to find out more.

Timetable

This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

By the end of this course, you will be able to

• order food in a bar or restaurant
• describe one's house

Grammar

• indefinite articles, there is, there are
• prepositions
• combined prepositions
• preposition and adverb of place
• duration form da
• imperative form of regular and some irregular verbs
• negative form of imperative
• introduction of direct object pronouns
• verbs taking direct object.

You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.

Assessment

Any assessment will be informal to help you evaluate your own progress.

Teaching

The course is fun and interactive, using a mix of classroom activities to check your understanding, including:

• role-play
• classroom discussion
• pair and group work
• pronunciation and intonation
• grammar in context.

Your weekly homework is a chance to practise what you have learned in class.

This course is ideal if you have studied Italian for about 20 hours and you know the very basics.

It’s the right level for you if you can:

• introduce yourself and talk about your family, profession, hobbies and weekly routine
• use the alphabet with Italian pronunciation
• understand the use of verbs in the present tense, reflexive verbs and some irregular verbs such as fare, avere, andare, uscire
• use personal pronouns and possessive adjectives.
