How to Become an Effective Leader, our brand new one day workshop is designed for people taking up their first or second management role. You will explore a number of “big-picture” issues - such as innovation, motivation, communication and optimisation - illustrated by real-life examples, drawn from the experience of our change management expert and Cass Business School visiting lecturer, Geoff Llewellyn. Geoff is a widely-experienced manager, management consultant and teacher whose 40-year career has spanned both the public and private sectors.

Our leadership training course provides an excellent overview of how to improve your management skills. This course is the perfect introduction for those wishing to test their interest in the subject before enrolling on our more in-depth 10 week training programme, Leadership and Management short course. This short course runs for 10 weeks building upon the knowledge, theories and practical experience, teaching you how to become an effective manager and leader.

All of our short courses and one day masterclasses are taught in our central London location at City, University of London’s main campus.

Course overview

Our approach to effective management is set in the context of the schools of thought that have informed managers’ thinking and world-views since professional company managers began to be separated from company proprietors as long ago as the 1850's. While much has changed since the 19th century, the early thinking about the managerial role and behaviours of managers and leaders is still highly relevant today.

This course will guide you through the foundations of these key management principles and how to apply them to real world management scenarios for both the large and small business.  It is designed to help you to make positive decisions, gain the respect of your colleagues and ultimately become a good manager with strong leadership skills.

Tutor information

  • Geoff Llewellyn

    Geoff Llewellyn’s management career has spanned the public and private sectors, following his graduate and postgraduate studies in social science and economics at London and Oxford Universities. The uniting theme of his career has been the management of change in large and complex organisations.

    After 20 years in major public sector organisations (the Manpower Services Commission, BBC and The Post Office) he took his consulting and change management skills into the private sector (Atos and Siemens IT consulting and outsourcing functions) before founding his own consulting business in 2006.

    As an independent consultant he has undertaken assignments for global and European “blue chip” organisations such as General Dynamics, Genpact and Wipro, with a focus on opening up new market opportunities, especially in the public sector.

    As a visiting Lecturer in the Cass Business School Faculty of Management he has taught courses on Professional Skills and Applied Systems Thinking for the past five academic years. His research interests include identity management and “the governance of Government”.

    Geoff Llewellyn's 40 year management career, following academic study in economics and sociology, has spanned the public and private sectors and line management to consultancy. He brings a wealth of "war stories" to illustrate the theoretical perspectives presented in the course.
