This introduction to Digital Filmmaking short course, run by experienced industry professionals, provides an opportunity to learn about digital filmmaking by taking part in the making of a short film.

Course overview

The course takes you through the pre-production, production and post-production processes of making a short film. Through practical application of taught skills.

What will I learn?

What will I learn?

You will gain an understanding of how the pre-production, production and post-production stages of digital filmmaking relate to each other creatively and practically. You will develop an understanding of the creative use of sound, camera and post-production techniques for your own film projects.

Initial classes on Visual Storytelling for directors will build knowledge of using the camera as a storytelling tool, which will then be put into practice in pre-visualising a scene that students will write during the first few weeks.

Under the supervision of two tutors you will then direct that scene during the practical shoot weekend in addition to taking on roles in camera and sound for other students shooting their scenes.

Important topics such as blocking action and maximising use of location form part of the process during the weekend.

During the final creative stage students will learn how editing further develops a story through pace and point of view.

Developing an understanding of the creative interconnection between the writing, shooting and editing stages underpins Digital Filmmaking course.

  • Week 1: Directing - Writing a Brief.
  • Week 2: Directing.
  • Week 3: Cinematography.
  • Week 4: Production.
  • Shoot Weekend: One the shoot weekend each student will shoot a short film on their phone. Tutors will be available online during the workshop hours for this process. While current circumstance prevent us assembling as crews this online models allows more individual shooting time as there are not crew rotations. This means students will end the course with a longer film.
  • Week 5: Editing.
  • Week 6: Editing.
  • Week 7: Editing.
  • Week 8: Editing and final review.



Prerequisite knowledge

You need to be computer literate. Although not compulsory, a basic understanding through experience of filmmaking processes or related disciplines would be useful.

English requirements

Applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.

Informal assessment will take place through group discussion, practical activities, and questions and answers sessions as guided by your tutor.

Tutor information

  • David Pope

    David Pope is a director, producer and screenwriter. He also works as a consultant on projects, company strategy and in developing and delivering training and development programmes for the international film industry and to the wider creative and cultural industries.

    Directing credits include the award winning feature film MILES FROM NOWHERE.

    Training and support work has included previously holding the position of CEO of the NPA (a national membership organisation for producers, directors and screenwriters) and Director of Education for New York Film Academy in London.

    David has also worked as a training consultant on curriculum and faculty development for The Irish Film Academy, The Metropolitan Film School, London Film Academy and City, University of London.

    He is also the consultant / moderator for The Rotterdam Lab for emerging producers at CineMart. Other clients, partners and collaborators have included the BFI, UK Film Council, BBC, Cannes Cinefondation, Xingu Films, The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Edinburgh International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Lionhead Studios, Power to the Pixel, Xingu Films, UK Film Centre at Cannes Film Festival, Short Film Corner Cannes Film Festival, Film London and FIKE (Portugal), IPIFF (Romania) and Expresion en Corto (Mexico) film festivals.

    In 2009 David was selected as a participant on the British Council Cultural Leadership International programme.

    Following cultural leadership conferences in Jordan and the UK his personally devised programme included meetings at Futures of Entertainment at MIT, The Sundance Institute, Film Independent and the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

    David is a British Film Institute associate tutor and has industry mentored for First Light, the UK Film Council backed initiative to support filmmaking by young people.
