Course overview

Our commercializing an idea training gives a structured approach to creating a product (service) concept and translate them into a commercially viable proposition. It addresses different stages of innovation and commercialization in class, giving you the opportunity of to implement the same on your chosen idea.  The innovation training, covers all types of concepts from methodologies, software, to engineering hardware.

There are six aspects to the course:

  • Concept Definition.
  • Innovation strategy.
  • Legal protection.
  • The Commercialization process.
  • Technology/Product development.
  • Market entry.

On the commercialization training course, you will learn how to:

  • Translate an idea to a commercially viable product.
  • Create innovation in your idea/concept.
  • Methods of protecting your idea.
  • Create a Commercialization plan
  • Make your idea attractive to investors/manufacturers/sale outlets.

Plans and templates for development will be provided.



Prerequisite knowledge

The desire to commercialize an idea of your own is paramount. A minimum of a degree is ideal but experienced individuals without a degree will cope well. You must also have your own idea to work through during the course.

English requirements

Applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.

Teaching & assessment

Teaching & assessment

The course will be taught in the classroom working through the student’s chosen idea over 10 weeks. These ideas would be taken through the commercialization process using standard templates and questionnaires to capture salient points of the training.

The course will be taught by two tutors, Mark Milhench, a Patent Attorney and Adebayo Ogunjimi, an Entrepreneur and a Technology Transfer professional.

Tutor information

  • Adebayo Ogunjimi

    Dr Ogunjimi has more than 15 years' experience of commercial technology development, innovation strategy and commercialisation. An accredited Project Manager, his experience focused on translating concepts to a commercial proposition and creation of strategic partnership for collaborative, innovative technology development. He has successfully negotiated several licensing agreements and facilitated start-up companies.

    Dr Ogunjimi currently manages a portfolio of intellectual properties at various stages from concept to market readiness and he is actively involved in developing IP management strategy and innovative methods of de-risking technologies for investment and market entry.

  • Mark Milhench

    Mark has almost twenty years' experience of intellectual property protection and exploitation, and in that time he has worked for several of the top London IP firms as well as US law firms. Mark is the Principal Patent Attorney for City University of London. Mark works to provide his clients with broad and commercially valuable protection for their inventions.

    Mark also has considerable experience obtaining patent and design protection in jurisdictions outside of the EU, in particular in China and the USA. While Mark's experience has been gained exclusively as a private-practice attorney, he is aware of and fully considers the commercial realities facing his clients.
