The course appeals to existing legal practitioners as well as those who wish to work in the field of civil and criminal litigation, arbitration, international litigation and dispute resolution, legal services and tribunals. As it is domestic and internationally focused, it should be of interest to students from the UK, Europe and around the world.
The Specialist Master of Laws (LLM) in International Dispute Resolution is a unique course which provides students with a strong understanding of international dispute resolution practice and theory in both civil and criminal matters. It concentrates on issues relating to international dispute resolution in criminal or civil justice, including conventional litigation as well as alternative dispute resolution practices such as arbitration and mediation.
This course gives you an opportunity to explore the area of criminal and civil justice from a domestic, international and European law context.
We are interested in receiving applications from individuals with at least an upper second-class honours undergraduate degree in law (roughly equivalent to a B or B+) from a recognised international institution. Applicants with a good undergraduate degree in another subject will also be considered.

We offer City students a loyalty discount upon enrolling on a second course at The City Law School. All you need to do is meet the entry requirements for your second course (postgraduate level) and we will automatically take 10% off of your tuition fees.

In addition to the fee-based scholarships we offer, each course also has a number of memorial prizes available. Each prize is course specific and available to all students enrolled on that course in any given year.
We work very closely with the profession and other relevant bodies and organisations and as such can offer students on all courses a number of externally funded gifts and prizes. There are currently around 30 different prizes on offer varying in value from £50 up to £5,000.
This prize is awarded to the student achieving the highest Distinction level mark on the LLM module Commercial/High Value Litigation in London. The prize is worth £50, and the winner will receive an invitation to lunch at the firm.
This prize is awarded to the student achieving the highest Distinction level mark in the LLM (Master of Laws) Dissertation. The prize is £80 worth of books from Edward Elgar Publishing.
This prize is awarded to the student achieving the highest Distinction level mark on the LLM module World Trade Law. The prize is worth £200, and the winner will receive an invitation to lunch at the firm.
This prize is awarded to the student achieving the highest Distinction level mark on the LLM module International Corporate Finance. The prize is worth £50, and the winner will receive an invitation to lunch at the firm.

This course is taught by leading academics as well as visiting practitioners including barristers and solicitors who work in private practice and in legal departments of major companies.
All modules are structured as 10 weekly two-hour seminars which comprise both lectures as well as interactive tutorials. All modules are supported by our online learning platform - Moodle.
Assessment is generally by way of coursework which comprises 100% of the final mark in each module. However there are a couple of modules which are assessed by filmed assessment. Each module carries the same weight in terms of the overall qualification.
You will be allocated a dedicated supervisor for your dissertation who will help them develop a specific topic and provide support in terms of resources, content and structure.
As with all Master of Laws (LLM) specialisms at City, University of London, you may take either 5 modules and a shorter dissertation (10,000 words) or 4 modules and a longer dissertation (20,000 words). All modules are of the same duration and are taught per term (September – December or January – April) rather than the whole academic year. If you take 4 modules you will take 2 per term in each term and if you take 5 modules you will have 3 in one term and 2 in the other. Dissertations are written during the summer term when there are no classes.
In order to obtain this specialism, you must choose at least two modules from within this specialism and write your dissertation on a subject within the specialism.
For your remaining modules you can choose from more than 40 modules covering a diverse range of subjects.
