Who is it for?

This programme is only suitable for those currently teaching students at the equivalent of Higher Education level 4 - and for some of the modules additional experience may be required. Research students at City, University of London who are required to teach are also eligible to attend and complete certain modules.


MA Academic Practice is a part-time postgraduate taught programme combining theory, practice, and the use of reflection to enable you to develop your teaching skills and educational knowledge for your role in Higher Education. The programme is primarily aimed at staff (internal or external to City, University of London) with an educating or facilitating role with students in Higher Education.

A key characteristic of the programme involves learning by working with peers, as well as through engagement with a number of educational technologies.

Requirements and how to apply

Entry requirements

The programme is open for application by staff at City, as well as external colleagues. To apply you should have a role that requires you to teach and facilitate students at the equivalent of Higher Education level 4. You should normally have a first or second class Honours degree (or equivalent non-UK qualification).

In order to undertake the assessments, you will also need experience of regular teaching or facilitation activity (part-time teaching is sufficient). This does not apply if you wish to only undertake a module on an attendance only basis (i.e. without being assessed or awarded a qualification).

All internal applicants are required to provide line-manager approval with their application. External applicants are required to submit one reference with (or shortly after) their application.

Visa requirements

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than six months
  • Students on courses of less than six months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English language course.

More about fees

If the Years 2 & 3 are applied for together, the fee is reduced to £2,300 in total for the two years.

All fees are waived for any City, University of London staff (including visiting lecturers) and current City PhD students. We are also able to offer a 25% reduction of fees for all staff from other member institutions of the University of London – although City staff will receive preference in the event of any capacity constraints.

Course content and assessment

Teaching and learning

This programme provides maximum flexibility in terms of you engaging with it.

Study is part-time and each module usually consists of between 2 and 6 days teaching spread across one or two terms. In addition, modules include a range of online activities and assessments.

Module Team

For each module of the programme, there is a Module Leader and normally a larger team involved in the provision of each module.

Teaching and Independent Study

There are different teaching arrangements for each module, depending on the type and size of the module. Most of the modules involve a set of four teaching days. Research based modules comprise less formal teaching and more supervision.

Independent study is included in all modules and and accounts for:

  • time spent on discussion boards
  • blogs
  • tutorials with your personal tutor
  • exploring areas for modules
  • reading and preparing for assessments.


All students are required to attend the first day of teaching, otherwise they will be removed from the module.

After completing the first day of teaching, students then can only miss one of the remaining days of teaching for each module. If a student misses more than one day, they will be removed from the module. The module EDM112 (Professional & Personal Development Planning) is the only exception to this, where all days must be attended.


Introductory Certificate in Academic Practice

This is a single module programme, comprising the Learning, Teaching and Assessment module, EDM120. Suitable for individuals for who have just entered into their
teaching career or for whom teaching is a minor, rather than a major, part of their role. The module is introductory and suitable for all who undertake any facilitation of student learning in Higher Education.

Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice

This is a part time programme. There are two routes for obtaining this qualification, both consisting of 60 credits. These routes are suitable for individuals new or relatively new to higher education for whom teaching is a major part of their role. The postgraduate certificate can usually be completed in one or two years.

Route 1: Postgraduate certificate in Academic Practice

  • Learning, Teaching & Assessment (EDM120); Professional & Personal Development Planning (EDM112); Curriculum Development & Evaluation (EDM106); Student Support & Personal Tutoring (EDM118)

Route 2: Postgraduate certificate in Academic Practice (Technology Enabled)

  • Learning, Teaching & Assessment (EDM120); Professional & Personal Development Planning (EDM112); Technology Enabled Academic Practice (EDM116; 30 Level 7 Credits)

Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice

This is a part time programme, usually completed over two or more years. This qualification can also be taken following the technology enabled route. The second stage modules are intended for more experienced staff or individuals who have satisfactorily completed the first year of the programme; or who have been able to enter the second year through AP(E)L (accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning). Students must gain 120 credits for this qualification.

MA Academic Practice

If you have successfully completed the requirements for either the Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice or the Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice (Technology Enabled) and would like to pursue a research project in educational research or disseminate a project they have done, the dissertation module (EDM114) may be undertaken. With the requirements of Years 1, 2 and 3 met, you are entitled to the qualification of MA Academic Practice, this being the only qualification available at full Master's level.

Core Modules

Professional & Personal Development Planning (EDM112; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • The module will encourage you to evaluate your practice with peers and reflect on future development as well as focusing on the scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and teaching excellence. Participants need to be engaged in teaching activities to complete two peer reviews in the year this module is taken.

Learning, Teaching & Assessment (EDM120; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • This is the baseline module for the MAAP programme, and introduces participants to key educational issues: learning, teaching, assessment and feedback. Participants on the module have to submit a peer supported review of their teaching within three months of starting this module and so must be teaching in the term they undertake the module.

Elective Modules

Curriculum Development & Evaluation (EDM106; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Focuses on curriculum models and philosophy, approaches to developing and evaluating curricula and stakeholder engagement. Participants must be involved in curriculum development opportunities to undertake this module - either as a module programme team providing a module and / or developing a module.

Researching Higher Education (EDM109; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • This is a 'lead in module' for the module EDM114. It provides guidance and practice in drawing up a proposal for educational research, and identifies key research methods.

Technology Enabled Academic Practice (EDM116; 30 Level 7 Credits)

  • This module provides a larger scale examination of how technology can be used to develop all aspects of academic practice. It offers the opportunity to develop expertise in the area of online and blended learning, and to become effective users and evaluators of a wide range of educational technologies.

Student Support & Personal Tutoring (EDM118; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Examines the range of support techniques needed for students in contemporary higher education, with a particular focus on the role of the personal tutor.

Research Supervision (EDM119; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to supervise students undertaking masters and doctoral level research projects.

Developing Leadership and Your Reflective Practice (EDM121; 30 Level 7 Credits)

  • This module focuses on those personal and professional skills required to become a reflective practitioner, and effective leader regardless of your position, within a higher education environment.

Digital Literacies and Open Practices (in Higher Education) (EDM122; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Examines the current impact that digital technologies have in HE specifically in relation to staff and student digital literacies and open practices.

Enhancing Your Academic Practice (EDM123; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • This module aims to help you identify one aspect of your academic practice you would like to change.

Dissertation (MA Academic Practice)

Educational Research Project & Publication (EDM114; 60 Level 7 Credits)

  • Allows participants the opportunity to undertake a genuine piece of educational research, with the guidance of a supervisor. The addition of this module leads to the MA.

Completion of this module is a core requirement for the Master's level qualification.

After you graduate

Career prospects

The programme is part time and so usually those of you who come have careers within education and already have teaching and facilitation responsibilities for students. This programme is designed to support your existing role as a lecturer, however the programme will provide you with new ideas and approaches that will support your development and enhance your profile when seeking promotion with the professional recognition of the programme.

Professional recognition

Higher Education Academy (HEA)

In order to gain Higher Education Academy Fellowship recognition, you must be working in Higher Education.

Please note that the HEA will charge a £150 fee for HEA Fellowship for individuals applying for professional recognition via accredited provision, who are not employed by a subscribing institution. Please seek advice from the programme team if this impacts on your recognition.

There are two points of recognition on this programme:

  1. If you successfully complete the Introductory Certificate in Academic Practice you may be eligible for recognition as an Associate Fellow of the HEA.
  2. If you successfully complete one of the two Postgraduate Certificate routes then you may be eligible for recognition as a Fellow of the HEA.

Please note that eligibility for either associate fellowship or fellowship will depend on your role, and the scope of this role in relation to teaching and supporting learning. More information on this is given on the programme.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

For anyone who is wishing to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a teacher you need to undertake the postgraduate certificate academic practice route and successfully achieve the requirements of this and meet the NMC requirements.

In order to apply for this route you must:

  • be registered in the same part or sub-part of the register as the students you will be supporting,
  • have completed at least three years post-registration experience and gained additional professional knowledge and skills in an area where students are gaining practice experience relevant to their registration,
  • have extended your professional knowledge, relevant to your field of practice, to at least first degree level, prior to undertaking an NMC approved post-graduate teacher preparation programme,
  • be able to teach and assess in both practice and academic settings,
  • have a current Pin No.

In addition to the requirements of the programme you will be required to undertake assessed teaching activity to include experience in both academic and practice settings, at least equivalent to a minimum of 12 weeks (or 360 hours), with students studying an NMC approved programme which you will record in a teaching log.
