Course overview

This module will begin by providing a philosophical background to modern approaches to research. It will cover the emergence of modernist sciences-relativism, empiricism positivism, induction deduction and hypothetico- deductivism. The introduction will be followed by sessions that look at the nature of data and aspects of its collection. The module will explore differing methodological approaches to research such as, experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, phenomenology, ethnography and grounded theory.

Aspects of data collection will include, the nature of variables, sampling regimes, measurement tools, validity and reliability. Having reviewed how data are collected, the principle methods of displaying both qualitative and quantitative data will be examined, an overview of the use of questionnaires, interview and other techniques will then follow. Approaches to analyses data will also be covered.

Central to these discussions will be the centrality of the researcher and participants in the construction of knowledge, ethics and values within research. The module will include exploring models of conducting and writing research critique and approaches to the implementation of research findings.
