Prerequisite knowledge

This course is particularly suited to the following professionals, Speech and Language Therapists, Teachers, Teaching/Learning Assistants, and Special Needs Co-ordinators, School Counsellors and Psychologists.

Please note that you need to be a practitioner working with children who are of nursery or primary age.

Assessment

Assessment

The course involves both presentations and practical activities in a workshop format. A Certificate of attendance is provided and this allows participants to attend a follow-up course, Level 2: Enhanced Training for working with clients with more complex Selective Mutism.

Not essential but, 'The Selective Mutism Resource Manual', Second Edition, (Johnson & Wintgens, 2016), is a key resource that we will be drawing on during the training and therefore it will be helpful if you are familiar with it.

  • Anita McKiernan

    Anita McKiernan is an Advanced Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with over 20 years experience working with clients with a wide spectrum of additional needs across the age range. Her particular area of expertise is in Selective Mutism.  She is the chair of both the National Clinical Excellence Network in Selective Mutism and the London and South East Region CEN and is an adviser in this area.  Anita also works as a Clinical Tutor/visiting Lecturer for City, University of London, where her teaching includes masterclasses on Selective Mutism.
