Course overview

Content outline

Content will comprise a number of essential areas; Firstly, the content includes in the first instance, general principles of pre-operative assessment and care in order to prepare the neonate undergoing surgery. These general principles will extend then to post-operative assessment and care, again as relevant to the neonate specifically. As part of this, there is an inclusion of the neonates response to surgery and the related anatomy and physiology that underpins this response. Specific conditions will be covered to include those acute unexpected conditions requiring emergency care and surgery (e.g. intestinal obstruction, NEC) as well as congenital surgical conditions acquired in utero presenting either antenatally or at delivery. Content also comprises the continuing care of the surgical neonate in the hospital and community setting in relation to long term implications for care and outcome.
