Experienced health and social care professionals are likely to be involved with teaching, supervising and assessing others in the workplace. These may be undergraduate or postgraduate students on approved clinical programmes, or students of other professions on related programmes. Similarly, professional practice often involves disseminating information and skills to your peers, new members of staff and other professionals. This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to undertake these tasks and enhance your skills in mentorship, teaching, supervision and assessment of others. The module also helps provide insight into your own learning and education needs and how these may be met.
For nurses and midwives, the module provides preparation for local registration as a mentor to pre-registration nurses and midwives, and is validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, UK. The module also has validation from the Society of Radiographers.
The overarching aims of the module are:
The module is unique in that it is facilitated entirely online, following a weekly seminar structure that students can access flexibly wherever and whenever convenient for them. Students are required to take an active role in online activities and forum discussions. All students are required to seek supervision for developing their mentoring or educational role within the practice setting.
The assignment for the module is a 2000 word critical review plus a portfolio of practice for all students from the nursing and midwifery professions. Allied professionals (such as radiographers) are not required by their professional body to complete a practice portfolio, and their assessment is a 3000 word essay discussing their teaching and learning practice.
