Contraception Update course Course overview
This course will teach you to confidently advise on contraceptive options in individual clinical cases, how to explain to patients how each contraceptive method should be used, and the ethical and legal aspects of contraceptives and their prescription in various scenarios.
This course covers different methods of contraception and their advantages and disadvantages; including the LARC (Long-Acting Reversible Contraception) method, injections, coils, IUD and IUS systems and the implant Nexplanon.
This course also provides a complete update on the combined pill, including guidance on taking the pill, emergency contraception and pregnancy testing.
Who is it for?
This course is for registered Nurses and Doctors who have completed the contraception course, and who want to ensure they have the most up-to-date information with which to advise patients on contraceptive methods.

In addition, the benefits and risks of different methods of contraception are also covered, as well as for whom and when a method is safe to use. It will be shown how this advice relates to UKMEC guidelines.

This course is presented using PowerPoint, scenarios, group work/discussion, storytelling and student interaction.

This course is provided by the School of Health & Psychological Sciences.
Eligibility
Participants must be a qualified member of staff (Midwife, Nurse or Doctor). Staff should have an existing understanding of contraception and be giving care to women in this field.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
