Who is the course for?
This course is designed for staff (Deaf staff, Teachers of the Deaf, Speech and Language Therapists, etc.) who work with primary school-aged deaf children who use British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate.
What is the aim of the course?
The aim of the course is to train participants to use the BSL Production Test, which is an assessment of narrative skills for deaf children aged 4-11 years.
What does the course cover?
The course has two parts: the first part takes place over 3 consecutive days, during which participants learn about language development in sign languages, receive a basic introduction to sign linguistics and learn how to code child BSL data. There are regular opportunities to practice coding in small groups. At the end of the 3 days, participants are given homework assignments to complete which they send to tutors for marking. The second part of the course is the follow up day, which takes place in September. Here, participants receive feedback on their assignments and discuss topics such as how to assess the language of children with additional needs, how to develop interventions based on assessment findings, etc.
You will learn about deaf children’s language development in BSL and acquire the skills needed to collect and analyse a narrative sample using the BSL Production Test. You will have opportunities to interact with course tutors and work in small groups to share skills and knowledge. Each full fee paying participant will receive an assessment pack.
Participants must have a minimum level 2 BSL (Signature) to attend the course. Evidence of this will be required. Pairs of staff from the same school or service are encouraged to attend together wherever possible.
All information will be presented in BSL or English with qualified interpreters. Small group work and feedback sessions each afternoon will be conducted in BSL only.
There will be a maximum of 20 participants on the course. The course content is delivered in informal lectures each morning with practical video-based coding activities each afternoon so that participants apply what they have learned and develop confidence in their coding skills. Participants complete a homework assignment after the first part of the course and must achieve a minimum level of coding reliability in order to be a registered test user.
