The aim of the course is to train participants to use the BSL Production Test, which is an assessment of narrative skills for deaf children aged 4-11 years. The course consists of 4 online modules taken over 4 months: Module 1 - Introduction to the BSL PT and the training course Module 2 - Sign language acquisition and scoring BSL narratives Module 3 - Sign linguistics and scoring BSL grammar Module 4 - Carrying out the test, interpreting and reporting on test scores, and next steps Students who complete modules and pass all assignments can be registered as users of the BSL Production Test. |
You will learn about deaf children’s language development in BSL, sign linguistics, and acquire the skills needed to collect and analyse a narrative sample using the BSL Production Test.
This course is designed for professionals (Deaf staff, Teachers of the Deaf, Speech and Language Therapists, etc.) working with primary school-aged deaf children who use British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate. The course provides and overview of sign language acquisition and BSL linguistics, as well as training in how to carry out and score the test. The course can be completed flexibly by participants since there is no requirement to attend live sessions. All modules are online and monthly webinars provide opportunities to interact with staff and other course participants.
Participants must have a minimum level 2 BSL (Signature) to attend the course. Evidence of this will be required. Pairs of staff from the same school or service are encouraged to attend together where possible.
Modules are presented in BSL or English. Small group webinars are conducted in BSL only.
The course content is delivered online with each module accompanied by a webinar. Module assignments provide opportunities to practice the different aspects of the assessment – test administration, scoring, test interpretation.
