Eligibility for clearing

Can I apply through Clearing?

We understand that Clearing can be a stressful time and you may have many questions about whether you are eligible or not. There are many reasons why you might be eligible for Clearing.

If you are eligible for Clearing, then you will receive a Clearing number and your UCAS Track application will either say that ‘You are in Clearing’ or that ‘Clearing has started’.

It is important that you keep this number safe, as it is what you will use when talking to universities and institutions with Clearing vacancies, because it allows them to look at your UCAS application.

Reasons for eligibility

  • If you applied after 30th June, you will have been automatically placed onto the Clearing list
  • If you applied before 30th June but did not receive any offers from your chosen universities
  • If you missed the conditions of your offers from both your firm and insurance university choices and as a result they have declined your application.

Technically, you will also be eligible for Clearing if you withdraw your application from your firm and/or insurance choices.

You may decide to withdraw your application if you wish to apply for another course, or you realise that you would rather attend another university or institution.

However, you should definitely consult with your teachers, head of college/sixth form and any advisors before you withdraw.

If you achieve better grades than you were predicted and would like to apply for an alternative course/institution then this is called Adjustment. Adjustment allows you to look for alternatives if you’ve met or exceed your grade expectations but still keep your firm choice course.

I have missed my grades; can I go through Clearing?

If your results are worse than expected and you have a conditional firm offer based on your exam results then Clearing is an option for you.

If both your firm and insurance choices have rejected you, then Clearing will allow you to select an alternative course or place to study.

At City we will have a number of vacancies available across a selection of undergraduate courses.

On results day, you can use our Clearing course finder to see what courses are available. You can also contact our team to discuss your options and offer advice.

If you are keen on a course at City, then be enthusiastic about it when you contact us and make sure you are ready to talk about your relevant studies. This will help us help you make the best decision on Clearing day.

It also depends on the demand for the course you are now applying for. If the course is in high demand and the quality of applicants is also high, you might want to look elsewhere, because universities might not be willing to lower their grade requirements.
