Varsity

A Varsity is a series of sporting fixtures between two local or rival universities. The oldest Varsity match in the world is in cricket between the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, having first been played in 1827.


City, University of London vs. Kingston University

28 teams, 2 universities, 1 trophy

The 2016- 2017 season brought with it the newest event to City’s sporting calendar – A brand new Varsity series against Kingston University!

Twenty-eight teams competed over nine different sports across two days in March, in the first of a three match Varsity series against the Kingston Cougars, in a bid to win the “Thames river trophy”

After two days of sporting action, Cheered on by 600 spectators and with a special appearance by CityWolf, the new official students’ sports mascot, City were victorious, winning 16-12 overall and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Varsity day one - Wednesday 21st March 2018

All sports will take place at Kingston University’s Tolworth Court sports ground, Old Kingston Road, Tolworth, KT4 7QH. Student supporters and athletes will need to purchase a ticket to attend day one.

  • Women's Netball LUSL team 2pm

Tickets cost £5.00 and will be available to purchase from CitySport reception in February 2018

Tickets include a supporters T-shirt, return coach travel and all give-it-a-go activities.

Varsity day two - Thursday 22nd March 2018

All sports are taking place at CitySport, 124 Goswell Road, EC1V 7DP.

  • Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles Badminton at Finsbury Leisure Centre, Norman Street, EC1V 3PU
  • Women’s Basketball at 5pm
  • Men’s Basketball at 7pm
  • Men's Futsal time tbc
  • Women's Netball at 11am
  • Women’s Volleyball at 3pm
  • Men’s Volleyball 1pm
  • PLUS performance from the Bhangra society
  • After party at CityBar

Free entry on day two. Bring your City, University of London ID card to gain entry to the sports hall.

Transport details

The supporters T-shirt is the ticket for the event, meaning students need to be wearing their T-shirt to board the coach.

Spectator coaches will be leaving City in the morning of Wednesday 21st March 2018. All coaches will return to City.

Spectators are welcome to make their own way to Tolworth Court Sports Ground.

Give-it-a-go sports

On day one, supporters will also have the opportunity to try:

  • Flag American Football
  • Lacrosse
  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Zorb Football
  • Touch Rugby
  • Gaelic Football

These fun and friendly sessions are for complete beginners so students do not need to worry if they have not played before. To take part, students are advised to wear comfortable clothing and trainers.

Food, drink and entertainment on Day 1

DJs will be playing throughout the day and food and drink will be available to purchase. Please note that food outlets will be cash only and that no alcohol is allowed to be brought onto the site.
