Research and enterprise activities at City are led by Professor Andrew Jones, Vice-President (Research & Enterprise), and Director of Research & Enterprise, Dr Karen Shaw.

Research and Enterprise Directorate

In 2016-17, The Research & Enterprise Directorate handled 400 new research funding proposals, 300 research-related contracts (live and new ones), and set up new awards valued at £12m. This was in addition to monitoring, assessing and approving research ethics applications. This work is crucial in the provision of reports for the President, Pro-Vice President (Research & Enterprise), Research & Enterprise Committee (and its subcommittees) and Schools, as well as for external reporting.

Research Support Services

This team incorporates functions including funder liaison and relationship management; horizon scanning; funding proposal development and contractual negotiations.  The team also supports ‘post award’ activities through facilitating connections with the Finance Directorate and with HR.

The team supports researchers at all stages of their funded research projects although the university provides focused support for research finance issues in the Research Finance team, which is part of the Finance Directorate.

Strategy & Compliance

This team provides strategy support for the Pro-Vice President (Research & Enterprise),  policy and systems development for R&E, and corporate compliance.  It provides the secretariat for, inter alia, the Senate Research Ethics Committee. The team works closely with both the Director of Research & Enterprise as well as the Pro-Vice President (Research & Enterprise) on all matters of R&E strategy including the REF2021, research impact, open access publications and data etc.

In addition, the team will provide institutional guidance and oversight for research ethics and integrity and be custodian of the R&E Management Systems from which they will co-ordinate provision of detailed internal management information (on R&E inputs and outputs).

Academic Enterprise

This team supports and co-ordinates strategic relationship brokering, consultancy, contract research, IP management and commercialization of research. It consists of a IP & Commercialisation consultants and in the School-based Business Development Managers.

Academic Enterprise have a close working relationship with the Research Support Services and the Strategy and Compliance teams particularly to support the impact agenda where they make a significant contribution. The entire team works closely with cognate professional services (e.g. Finance).
