Our research directly addresses major challenges facing the world. Whether it's science policy, climate change, economic forecasting or the social cohesion of London communities, our work makes a difference.

Established research excellence

We foster innovative and world-leading research that shapes the lives of thousands, inspires our students and makes a tangible contribution to the knowledge economy.

City has over 50 research centres across its six Schools, with a strong interdisciplinary focus. These centres provide a structure that supports collaboration across the institution.

Our research centres explore key societal issues and attract significant funding from sources including the European Commission, UK Research Councils, Charitable Foundations and the private sector.

These groups enable staff to work with leaders of industry, government and academia worldwide, and to learn from business challenges and innovations wherever they occur which helps keep our research relevant while helping to shape policy and regulation and strengthen industry.

Emerging research power

Working internationally enables our academics to increase the reach of their impact. City participates in around fifty research projects a year as part of its Global Challenges Research Programme for sustainable development, addressing:

  • social and economic issues
  • decent work and economic growth
  • fighting against inequality
  • exclusion and injustice
  • tackling food shortages
  • putting an end to extreme poverty.

The Global Challenges Research Fund is part of the UK's official development assistance that addresses the United Nations sustainable development goals, a collection of 17 global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all" by 2030, and are part of UN Resolution 70/1, the 2030 Agenda.
