The Doctoral College at City encourages a culture of discovery and enterprise by providing a range of training, development and networking opportunities for Doctoral Researchers.
We encourage a culture of discovery and enterprise and provide a range of ways to support you as a Doctoral Researcher, to ensure that your time at City is positive and inspiring. In addition, The Doctoral College is a signatory to the Concordat, embedding our commitment to support the career development of our researchers.
We primarily support our Doctoral Researchers through The Researcher Development Programme (DRDP), however, we also provide a comprehensive suite of professional development opportunities such as an induction programme upon enrollment, Researchers' Development Days, seminars, and opportunities to present research and develop research skills by participating in a Festival of Research, as well as 3MThesis.
The Vitae Framework
The Doctoral College Researcher Development Programme (DRDP) has been mapped against The Vitae Researcher Development Framework (RDF) and aims to meet your needs at different stages in your research.
Using the RDF model and engaging with the Doctoral College Researcher Development Programme (DRDP), will enable you to conceptualise and identify key areas for your research and professional development, throughout your research journey at City, University of London.
Vitae is a global leader in supporting the development of PhD students, Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and research staff to succeed within their PhD Research lifecycle, academic careers or to aid career progression outside of academia.
The Vitae Researcher Development Framework (RDF) has been endorsed by over 30 organisations including UK Research and Innovation as well as Concordat.
As such we strongly recommend that you become familiar with the Vitae RDF, before you start browsing and booking yourself into sessions that are available via the Doctoral College Researcher Development programme (DRDP).
All training and development opportunities available within the Researcher Development Programme (DRDP) will enable you to:
- continue to embed knowledge and expand on your intellectual abilities (Domain A of the Vitae Framework )
- improve and strengthen your personal effectiveness (Domain B of the Vitae Framework)
- gain a deeper understanding of research governance (Domain C of the Vitae Framework)
- and ensure that engagement, influence and impact skills are maximised (Domain C of the Vitae Framework).

The Doctoral College offers all of its Doctoral Researches free access to LinkedIn Learning.
You will not need to register, simply login using your primary City student email address.

Training and development with external partners
In addition, courses are offered by our external partners such as the South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) (which has its own dedicated virtual learning platform VLE) and The Bloomsbury Network (BPSN).
These opportunities are usually communicated via our dedicated online MS Team site for Doctoral Researchers on a weekly basis.
Further information on how to register for the SeNSS VLE or the BPSN are available on the MS Team site. If you get stuck, post a message and the Doctoral College Training and Deveopment Coordinator will be able to help.
The MS Team site is also a hub for information on forthcoming events, conferences, competitions and funding opportunities, as well as being a social hub for Doctoral Researchers to meet and get to know each other.
