The City University of London (City Law School) offers six full-time, three-year doctoral scholarships for entry in September 2023
City University of London Centrally Funded Doctoral Studentship

City, University of London is offering 15 doctoral studentships starting in October 2023 as part of a scheme that will recruit outstanding researchers and eventually support 45 studentships across its six Schools. The studentships comprise a stipend that tracks the UKRI rate (currently £19,668 pa) and tuition fees. Successful applicants will also have access to additional resources provided by their School.
Funding
- Funding is available for UK, EU and international students studying full-time or part-time
- Full-time students will receive a maintenance grant currently £19,668 per annum that will rise in line with UKRI stipends. Tuition fees are also paid.
- In addition to resources within the Schools, project/consumable costs of £1,500 are provided.
Research Areas
We are inviting applications for 2 PhD scholarships funded by the City, University of London on EU Law and Commercial Law. We understand these two areas broadly:
- EU law covers competition, constitutional and administrative law, migration, citizenship, trade and investment, health, human rights, media and intellectual property
- Commercial law covers maritime, corporate, investment, arbitration, data protection and privacy, intellectual property, competition law, and commercial aspects of law in society, eg in medical law.
The School has expertise in both these areas and we invite prospective applicants to look at our website and even approach our EU and commercial law colleagues.
City Law School Doctoral Studentships

The City Law School offers two full-time, three-year doctoral scholarships for entry in September 2023.
Applications are invited from exceptional and ambitious graduates wishing to pursue cutting-edge research in any of the School's key research areas.
Who is eligible?
Applications are sought from exceptional UK/EU and international graduates and will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and the potential to produce cutting edge-research.
Applicants should have a track record of high academic achievement, demonstrated by an LLB degree with at least a second class (upper division) or equivalent, and normally a master’s degree (in law or a related discipline) with at least a merit or equivalent.
Applicants should demonstrate a suitable aptitude to undertake a course of independent research.
Applicants whose first language is not English must have achieved an overall score of 7.0 in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum of 6.5 in the reading and writing subtests.
What is offered?
A doctoral scholarship will provide:
- An annual bursary (currently £19,668 but subject to change in line with Research Councils UK’s recommendation on the national minimum stipend)
- Full tuition fee waiver
- Research expenses (up to £1,000 over three years) to support research needs such as specialist training, equipment, or conference attendance.
